ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's swimming and diving team will compete at the 2017 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) Championship from the Ithaca College Athletics and Events Center. The four-day meet begins on Wednesday, Feb. 15 and ends on Saturday, Feb. 18. Preliminary action begins each day begins at 10 a.m. with the finals getting underway at 6 p.m.
RIT enters the meet having finished the regular season with an 8-2 record in dual meets, while placing third at the Liberty League Championship. The Tigers will look to better last season's fifth place finish at the UNYSCSA Championship, which included four new school records.
Several different Tigers will be in the mix for personal best efforts. Sophomore
Sedera Zbranak (Austin, TX/Lake Travis) has a team-best time in five events. RIT's Female Athlete of the Week on Jan. 23, Zbranak is RIT's leader in the 100-yard freestyle (54.82 seconds), 200-free (1:57.82), 50-yard backstroke (28.07 seconds), 100-backstroke (59.31 seconds), and 200-backstroke (2:10.86). Zbranak has won 16 events and has 20 top-three finishes this season.
Senior
Genevieve Senecal (Westfield, MA/Westfield) is RIT's top swimmer in the butterfly events, posting a time of 59.92 seconds in the 100-fly and 2:13.98 in the 200-fly. She has 12 wins and six second place efforts in 2016-17. Sophomore
Amy Adams (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy), a four-time school record holder, leads the way in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.14) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:32.36). Adams has 11 wins and 18 top-three finishes.
In freestyle action,
Daylen Smith (Lockwood, NY/Waverly) has RIT's fastest time in the 50-yard event this season at 25.65 seconds. Smith has won seven races and finished as runner-up in seven other events. Sophomore
Olivia Phillips (Louisville, CO/Fairview) is RIT's fastest performer in the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.47) and is also a standout in the backstroke and butterfly. She has a team-best 24 top-three efforts in 2016-17.
Freshman
Emily Lederman (Morgantown, WV/Morgantown) has been a consistent performer for the Tigers in her rookie season, with nine wins. She is RIT's fastest swimmer in the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.62) and 400-yard individual medley (4:55.56). Sophomore
Adeline Maykish (Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) has added 18 top-three finishes and is a standout in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:11.86).
Brenna Woodling (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville East) also has 18 top-three finishes and is one of RIT's most versatile swimmers. She was RIT's Female Athlete of the Week on Nov. 7.
Senior
Megan O'Connor (Spring City, PA/Owen J. Roberts) along with freshman
Eleanor O'Gorman (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth), sophomore Katie Mayer, and senior
Rachel Kobel (Bergen, NY/Byron-Bergen) will all look to contribute and smash personal records for the Tigers.
As always, RIT's relay teams will be counted on to excel with each school record in jeopardy.
On the diving board,
Alaiya Tuntemeke (Livonia, NY/Livonia) and
Amanda Drake (Endicott, NY/Maine Endwell), along with
Madeline Wolters (Hilton, NY/Hilton), and
Megan Smith (Monroe, CT/Masuk) will look to contribute for the Tigers. Tuntemeke has 15 top-three finishes for RIT this season, while Drake has 13.
The Tigers will have several student-athletes in the mix for NCAA Championship berths. The NCAA Championship will take place from March 22-25 in Shenendehowa, Texas.
