Women's swimming and diving finishes eighth at 2010 UNYSCSA/Empire 8 Championships
SYRACUSE, NY - The RIT women's swimming and diving team smashed three school records finishing eighth at the 2010 UNYSCSA/Empire 8 Championships hosted by LeMoyne College at Nottingham High School is complete.  The Tigers finished eighth out of 16 teams with a total of 489.5 points.

SYRACUSE, NY -
The RIT women's swimming and diving team smashed three school records finishing eighth at the 2010 UNYSCSA/Empire 8 Championships hosted by LeMoyne College at Nottingham High School is complete.  The Tigers finished eighth out of 16 teams with a total of 489.5 points.

Senior Caitlyn Burr (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy), the defending UNYSCSA Swimmer of the Meet, repeated as champion in the 200-yard individual medley, breaking her own school record and recording a NCAA "A" cut time, finishing in 2:05.53. She broke her own school record in the event by 11 one-hundredths of a second.

On Friday, Burr placed second in the 400-yard IM with a NCAA "B" cut time of 4:30.39, breaking her own school record which she set earlier in the season.  She was in the lead until the final lap.

On Saturday, Burr placed second in the 200-yard butterfly coming home in a NCAA "B" cut qualifying time of 2:06.29.

The 400-yard medley relay team of Jenna Hoffman (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena), Kerzia Hopson (Norwich, NY/Norwich), Burr, and Rachel Lorenz (Norwich, NY/Norwich) smashed a two-year school record by seven seconds, finishing eighth in the prelims with a time of 4:05.20.  They went on to finish eighth in the finals with a time of 4:06.08.

Hopson had a tremendous showing in the 100-breaststroke, placing seventh in a time of 1:07.98.  She just missed breaking a school record by 63 one-hundredths of a second.

On Friday, the 800-yard freestyle relay squad of Lorenz, Melissa Harrison (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Valley), Burr, and Courtney Schwarting (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake ) earned an excellent fifth place finish, with a time of 8:05.11.  Burr's 200-free split was 1:57.11, while Schwarting completed her split in 1:59.93.

Also on Friday, the 200-yard medley relay team of Hoffman, Hopson, Molly Woods (Avon, CT/Avon), and Rachel Redfearn (Marshfield, MA/Sacred Heart) placed eighth in a time of 1:54.28.

Also on Saturday, the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Sara Kucsan (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan ), Lorenz, Schwarting and Burr placed sixth in the finals in a time of 3:40.12.

Last season, Burr was named the 2009 UNYSCSA Swimmer of the Meet after winning three individual titles, including the 200-yard butterfly. In addition, she currently holds eight different individual RIT school records and five relay records. This season, she continues to be one of the nation’s top swimmers, placing first in 35 events. She has recorded 2010 NCAA B-cut times in the 200- and 400-yard individual medley and in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly, and is the top ranked swimmer in the state in four different events.

The other participating teams in the overall field of 17 include Empire 8 members Alfred, Hartwick, Nazareth, RIT, Stevens and Utica. The remaining teams, primarily from the Liberty League, include Cazenovia, Clarkson, Le Moyne, Rensselaer, Skidmore, St. Lawrence, Union, Vassar, Wells and William Smith.
