CANTON, NY -- The RIT men's indoor track and field team placed third out of six teams at the 2018 Liberty League Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by St. Lawrence University on Feb. 23-24. The Tigers recorded a team score of 132.33 points. Liberty League newcomer Ithaca took the team title with 187.33 points, nipping defending champion Rensselaer by four points.
RIT picked up big points in the 5,000-meters as
James Bailey (Danvers, MA/Danvers) and
Otto Kingstedt (Stockholm, Sweden/Cybergymnasiet) placed first and third respectively, and
Reid Kovacs (Palo Alto, CA/Henry M. Gunn) came home sixth. Bailey won the race by 15 seconds in an impressive time 14:50.57, while Kingstedt came home third in a time of 15:05.88. Kovacs earned three points for RIT, finishing sixth in a time of 15:26.48. Kingstedt and
Evan Feigel (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) were second and fourth, respectively, for RIT in the 3,000-meters. Kingstedt recorded a time of 8:29.86, while Feigel crossed the finish line in 8:39.35.
The Tigers had four place in the top-eight in the pole vault.
Ethan Maguire (Penfield, NY/Penfield) won the event with a vault of 4.75 meters. Sophomore
Jack Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) was second with a vault of 4.60 meters. Steven Yeung was seventh (4.30 meters), while
Thomas James () finished in a three-way tie for eighth (4.15 meters). It is the sixth straight year a Tiger has won the pole vault.
RIT earned 10 points with a win in the distance medley relay. The team of
Dan Jones (Lockport, NY/Lockport),
Matthew Woods (Clarence, NY/Clarence),
Rob Dalheim (Rochester, NY/Brockport) and Feigel won the event in a time of 10:30.59. Dalheim,
Jeff Walter (),
Stephen Morrissey (New Milford, CT/Trinity-Pawling School) and Giuliano placed second in the 4 x 400-meter relay, recording a time of 3:25.38.
Giuliano earned a big win the in the long jump, as he recorded a leap of 7.01 meters, while Morrissey placed fourth with a jump of 6.63 meters. Giuliano also earned runner-up honors in the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 8.48 seconds. Teammates
Max Gloskey () (8.82 seconds) and
Dustin Van Kirk (Canton, CT/Canton) (9.23) also earned points for the Tigers.
Matthew Lienhard (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic), the defending Liberty League Champion in the 60-meter dash, finished third overall with a time of 7.12 seconds. He was also fourth in the 200-meters, completing the race in 22.91 seconds.
Mickey Evans (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) and
Kent Kellar (Wells, ME/Wells) combined for seven points in the shot put. Evans was fourth with a toss of 13.13 meters, while
Kent Kellar (Wells, ME/Wells) was seventh with 12.72 meters.
Ethan Ettienne (Lanham, MD/Model Secondary School for the Deaf) was third overall in the weight throw with an impressive toss of 15.17 meters. Morrissey and
Devante Marshall (Gloversville, NY/Mayfield) placed sixth and seventh overall in the triple jump, both leaping 12.95 meters.
RIT returns to action next weekend at the two-day NCAA Atlantic Regional, hosted by Ithaca College.
