ROCHESTER, NY – Senior
Amy Guthrie (Essex Junction, VT/Essex) of the RIT women's crew team, was selected to the 2017 Pocock/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Division III All-America First Team. Guthrie becomes RIT crew's first All-America selection in program history.
Guthrie, who sat stroke seat for the varsity eight and served as a co-captain, played an integral part for the Tigers in 2016-17. RIT won its first Liberty League Championship and advanced to the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history, placing fifth overall. Last month, Guthrie was also named to the National Invitational Rowing Championship (NIRC) All-Stewards Team.
RIT's varsity eight was selected as the Liberty League Crew of the Year in 2017. The Tigers won their first-ever Liberty League championship this spring with a time of 7:14.05 as they took first place in the varsity eight. The eight-time Liberty League Boat of the Week selection also earned silver medals at the New York State Collegiate Rowing Championships with a second place showing and they claimed the petite final at the National Invitational Rowing Championship. Guthrie wrapped up her collegiate career by helping lead the varsity eight to a strong fifth place finish in the Grand Final of the NCAA Championships with a speedy time of 6:40.07. In the fall, RIT won the Kate Louise Cup for the first time since 2002 at the Head of the Genesee Regatta and finished fifth at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta.
A standout in the classroom, Guthrie, an electrical engineering major, was also named a CRCA Scholar Athlete, earned NIRC All-Academic Team honors, and Liberty League All-Academic accolades.
"Amy is truly deserving of this honor, and has the distinction of being our first athlete to be selected to the All-America Team," said RIT head coach
Jim Bodenstedt. "Over the course of her career, she worked very hard to strengthen herself as an athlete and become a top performer. As co-captain this year she furthered the program's success with her competitive drive and leadership. The coaching staff is very proud of Amy and wish her all the best as she finishes her fifth year of study in electrical engineering."
