SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The nationally ranked No. 8 RIT women's crew team earned a duo of silver medals at the New York State Collegiate Rowing Championships at Fish Creek on Saratoga Lake on Saturday. The Tigers placed second in the varsity eight and second varsity eight behind first place finisher Ithaca College in both events.
The conditions were beautiful for the morning heats but deteriorated for the afternoon finals due to high winds.
The varsity eight of
Erin Loughran (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy),
Amy Guthrie (Essex Junction, VT/Essex),
Emma Kohler (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius),
Taylor Blackwell (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland),
Cassandra Killion (New Plymouth, ID/Nampa Christian),
Hayley Richardson (Kennebunk, ME/Kennebunk),
Clarissa Brown (Fairport, NY/Fairport),
Colleen Ryan (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) and
Claire Thomas (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) stopped the clock at 6:58.500 to beat out the U.S. Military Academy by more than 16 seconds in the second heat of the day. Skidmore was next in 7:20.524 and Geneseo finished fourth in 9:25.690.
The afternoon's final was re-rowed due to a protest by Ithaca College after the initial race. Following the second race, RIT filed a protest and Hamilton College filed a counter-protest. RIT and Hamilton were awarded a tie for second place in 7:28.738. Ithaca took home first with a time of 7:16.690. St. Lawrence (7:56.18), Army (8:23.89) and Skidmore (8:37.16) rounded out the field.
RIT also raced to a silver medal in the second varsity eight.

Colleen Albert (Burlington, CT/Lewis S. Mills) and
Debbie Kunz (Owego, NY/Owego) posted a time of 8:27.331 behind first-place finisher Ithaca (8:10.500). St. Lawrence was third in 8:41.636, Hamilton fourth in 8:52.519, Ithaca B fifth in 9:01.075 and Vassar sixth with a time of 9:45.595.
RIT's novice eight of

Jordan Melita (North Chili, NY/Churchville Chili),
Anna Schum-Houck (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) and
Varada Krishnadas (Canton, MA/Canton) finished fourth in their heat, posting a time of 8:07.586. Rochester was first with a time of 7:28.900. The finals were cancelled due to the poor weather conditions.
The Tigers head to Worcester, Mass. to row in the National Invitational Rowing Championships on Friday, May 12.
