POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The RIT men's track and field team placed second overall out of six teams at the 2017 Liberty League Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Weinberg Field on the campus of Vassar College Saturday.
RIT finished with a team score of 217 points, as Rensselaer won its ninth straight team title with 283 points.
Rob Dalheim (Rochester, NY/Brockport) was a three-time winner for the Tigers. He won the 400-meter dash by six one-hundredths of a second over Harrison Stivers of St. Lawrence in a time of 49.75 seconds. The 4 x 100-meter relay team of
Kyle Kaniecki (Burton, OH/West Geauga),
Matthew Lienhard (Allentown, PA/Allentown Catholic), Dalheim, and
Curtis Geiger (Allentown, PA/Emmaus) won by just over a second in a facility record of 42.54 seconds. Dalheim,
Christopher Callejo (West Babylon, NY/Patchouge-Medford),
Eric Hambleton (Weare, NH/Bishop Brady), and Geiger took the 4 x 400-meter relay by just under two seconds in 3:21.10. Geiger just missed his third title in the 200-meters, finishing second by a tenth of a second in 22.41 seconds.
The Tigers garnered 28 points in the 100-meter dash, with six of the top eight finishers. Lienhard won by 14 one-hundredths of a second in 11.09 seconds. Sodiq Alaraba Oladipo (third, 11.26), Geiger (fourth, 11.27), and Kaniecki (fifth, 11.40), rounded out the top-five. RIT had four of the top six finishers in the 110-meter hurdles, earning 20 points.
Myles Garner (Gurnee, IL/Warren Township) was second overall in 15.21 seconds, while
Daniel Giuliano (Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) was fourth (15.71),
Jeremy McGrath (Chittenango, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) placed fifth (15.82), and
Frank Borseti (Andover, MA/Andover) was sixth (16.10).
James Bailey (Danvers, MA/Danvers) was victorious in the 10,000-meter run, setting a facility record and was less than a second shy of a Liberty League record, winning by 13 seconds in a time of 31:22.46.
Otto Kingstedt (Stockholm, Sweden/Cybergymnasiet), who broke the 10,000-meter school record a week ago, used a strong late kick to win the 5,000-meters by four seconds in a time of 15:02.67.
Callejo was fifth in the 400-meters (50.97 seconds), while Michael Kahovec placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (59.02 seconds). Callejo was also sixth in the 200-meters in 22.95 seconds, while Oladipo was two one-hundredths of a second back in seventh.
Grant Salk (Livermore, CA/Granada) was sixth in the 1,500-meters, crossing the finish line in 4:04.08. Salk was also seventh in the 800-meters with a time of 1:59.05, just behind Meehan, who placed fourth in 1:57.96.
Tommy Papish (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville) was sixth in the 5,000-meters in 15:37.01.
Giuliano and
Nick Ng (Wayland, MA/Wayland) recorded top-four finishes in the long jump. Guiliano was second with a leap of 6.57 meters, while Ng was fourth (6.44 meters). Ng was second in the triple jump with a leap of 13.13 meters, while
Bradley Morissette (Auburn, ME/Edward Little) finished sixth (12.50 meters).
Jack Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) was second in the pole vault with a leap of 4.13 meters and was fourth in the high jump (1.85 meters).
Ethan Maguire (Penfield, NY/Penfield) and
Michael Kist (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) both had top vaults of 3.98 meters in the pole vault. Maguire cleared the height on his second attempt to finish third, while Kist needed a third attempt to clear, earning fourth.
Jake Saxton (Merrimack, NH/Bishop Brady) fired the shot put 13.79 meters to finish third in the event, while
Kent Kellar (Wells, ME/Wells) finished fifth (13.16 meters). Saxton was also third in the hammer throw with a top throw of 46.16 meters.
Zach Darling (Rome, PA/Northeast Bradford) was fifth in the hammer throw with a throw of 44.97 meters.
Emmanuel Aire (Cave Creek, AZ/Cactus Shadows)-Oaihimire placed third in the javelin with a throw of 49.49 meters, while
Rajab Curtis (New York City, NY/Deerfield Academy) (46.69 meters) placed fifth.
The Tigers will potentially send a select few athletes to the prestigious Penn Relays next week in Philadelphia, Pa. On Saturday April 29, RIT will compete as a team at the Cardinal Classic hosted by St. John Fisher College, which gets underway at 10 a.m.
