Four from women's lacrosse named to IWLCA All-Academic squad

ROCHESTER, NY – Nicole Bingo (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder), Holly Leone (Centerport, NY/Harborfields), Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima), Julia Spier (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley), of the RIT women's lacrosse team, were selected to the 2016 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Zag Sports Academic Honor Roll. In order to be eligible for this honor, student-athletes must be a junior, senior, or graduate student, and earn a cumulative academic grade point average of 3.50 or greater.
 
Bingo, a junior physician's assistant major, played and started 16 games in 2016, tallying nine points on seven goals and two assists. A two-time Liberty League All-Academic selection, Bingo scooped up a career-high 27 ground balls, and caused 19 turnovers and had 11 draw controls.

Leone, a co-captain, played in and started all 16 games in 2016. The senior defender led the team with 27 ground balls and had a career-best 23 caused turnovers. Leone was a First Team All-Liberty League selection as well as an IWLCA Second Team All-New York Region selection. The President of RIT's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Leone helped RIT's defense hold opponents to 10.81 goals per game, and was fifth in the Liberty League causing 1.53 turnovers per game. An industrial design major, Leone tallied three goals and an assist and is a three-time Liberty League All-Academic Team selection.

Sarkis, who played in the IWLCA North/South Game, led RIT and was second in the Liberty League with 82 points on 63 goals and 19 assists. The senior attack led the league in goals, averaging 3.94 per game, earning IWLCA All-Empire Region honors. A hospitality and service major, Sarkis averaged 5.13 points per game, and scored at least one goal in all 16 games, including a season-high seven goals versus Farmingdale State. Sarkis, a three-time Liberty League All-Academic selection, finished her career at RIT second all-time in points (267), goals (213) and was fourth at the university with 54 assists.

Spier, a biomedical sciences major, played in 11 games in 2016, grabbing three ground balls, caused two turnovers and had three draw controls. A two-time Liberty League All-Academic selection, Spier helped RIT's defense hold opponents to 10.81 goals per game.
 
The Tigers posted a team grade-point average of 3.23, and had 13 players selected to the 2016 Liberty League Spring All-Academic Team.

RIT finished 2016 with an 8-8 overall record and went 5-4 in Liberty League play. The Tigers ended the season on a four-game winning streak.
