ROCHESTER, NY – Three members of the RIT men's lacrosse team were selected to play for the North in the 2016 USILA/Nike Division III North/South Game. Seniors
Kyle Sterzin (Fairport, NY/Fairport),
Matt Hossack (Port Perry, Ontario/Port Perry) and
Jakob Krzyston (Bedford, NH/Bishop Guertin) will represent the Tigers on Friday, May 27 at 3 p.m. on the campus of Cabrini College in Radnor, Pa.
Hossack, the two-time Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year, started all 20 games at long-stick midfield in 2016. He led the team with 25 caused turnovers and 114 ground balls. The 2015 USILA Iroquois Nationals Award winner for Division III's finest player, Hossack helped RIT's defense hold opponents to 8.20 goals per game, and was sixth on the team in scoring with 26 points on 14 goals and 12 assists. He was named Liberty League Tournament MVP for the second straight season after grabbing 18 ground balls, tallying two goals, dishing out four assists, causing three turnovers and winning 8-of-11 face-offs in two tournament games. Hossack, who recently made his professional debut for the Denver Outlaws of Major League Lacrosse, was named MLL Rookie of the Week, finished his career at RIT fifth all time with 369 career ground balls. He will be honored on May 31 by the Rochester Press Radio Club as the Rich Funke, Jr. Male College Athlete of the Year.
Krzyston, a close defenseman, played in all 20 games this season, helping the team hold opponents to 8.20 goals per game. A 2016 first team All-Liberty League selection, Krzyston had 39 ground balls and caused 23 turnovers. In the classroom, Krzyston holds a 3.64 grade point average in biomedical engineering with a minor in mechanical engineering. He was named to the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-District team and was a three-time Liberty League All-Academic selection, and was named to the RIT's President List on two occasions.
Sterzin, an All-Liberty League Second Team selection, started all 20 games this season and was third on the team in scoring with 66 points on 43 goals and 23 assists, all career-highs. Sterzin tallied nine points on five goals and four assists in two Liberty League Tournament games, including three goals and three assists in the title game versus Rensselaer. In the NCAA Tournament, Sterzin tallied eight goals and dished out two assists in two games. He tied for 21st all time in scoring at RIT with 149 career points.
These three were part of a class of 2016 that helped RIT to a 78-7 overall record, four Liberty League Tournament titles, four trips to the NCAA Tournament, and helped RIT to its first appearance to the National Championship Game in 2013 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
