Hailey Burkhart (Underhill, VT/Mt. Mansfield Union) and junior
Jess Calzolari (Longmont, CO/Mead) of the RIT women's track and field secured 13 points in the heptathlon at the 2016 NYSCTC Championship on Sunday, May 1 and Monday, May 2 at the Merrick-Pinkard Track and Field Complex on the campus of St. Lawrence University. Burkhart was the individual winner for the third year in a row, finishing with 3,953 points.
Burkhart won her third straight New York State title with 3,953 points, winning by 107 points over Allison Scarf of St. Lawrence. Burkhart did not win any individual events, but was second in the 100-meter hurdles (15.33 seconds), 200-meter dash (27.66 seconds), and javelin (29.71 meters). She is RIT's record holder in the event with 4,332 points, set last season.
Calzolari finished sixth overall with a score of 3,709 points. She was the top individual finisher in the high jump with a leap of 1.62 meters and was second in the long jump with a leap of 4.60 meters. Her leap in the high jump broke a 26-year old school record of 1.57 meters, originally held by Kristina Schulze in 1990 and later equaled by Molly Urquhart in 2000. Both women are in the RIT Athletics Hall of Fame.
Burkhart, Calzolari, and the rest of the Tigers will compete at the 2016 NYSCTC Championships on Friday and Saturday from Harkness Field at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.
