Seven RIT baseball student-athletes earn 2016 All-Liberty League accolades

Will Gorman and Brandon Cohall honored for third straight season

ROCHESTER, NY – Seven members of the RIT baseball team earned 2016 All-Liberty League postseason honors, as the league announced its annual awards on Tuesday, May 17. Junior outfielder Will Gorman (Nassau, NY/Columbia) was RIT's lone first team selection. Three players were second team selections, while three more earned honorable mention accolades.
 
Senior Brandon Cohall (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas), freshman Jason Schulz (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), and senior Zach Zabel (Clarence, NY/Clarence) garnered second team honors, while senior Rory Little (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), sophomore Brian Reed (Rochester, NY/Penfield), and freshman Daniel Zeglen (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) were honorable mention picks.
 
Gorman, also a first team selection last year and an honorable mention pick in 2014, re-wrote the single-season record book at RIT in 2016. He set single-season school marks with 61 hits, 166 at-bats, eight home runs, 52 runs batted in, and 107 total bases, while stealing eight bases, batting .367, and slugging .645. He was incredible over the last 12 games of the season, hitting five homers, while driving in 34 runs. Gorman finished the season by slugging 1.032 with 24 RBIs over his final seven games, including a single-game record tying eight RBIs against Bard on May 7. He had 18 multiple-hit games and reached base in all but three games. Gorman is second all-time at the university with 17 home runs and 112 RBIs and third with a .624 career slugging percentage.
 
Cohall, a 2014 All-Liberty League honorable mention pick and 2015 second team selection, was RIT's most consistent hurler in 2016, going 4-4 with six complete-games, two shutouts, and a 2.73 earned run average. He recorded an incredible strikeout to walk ratio of 55-5, allowing opposing hitters to bat just .243 in 56 innings. On April 17, Cohall threw a one-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts in a win over Rensselaer and also shutout Clarkson with a three-hitter on March 26. All six of Cohall's starts in Liberty League play were complete games. In four seasons at the university. Cohall won 13 games with a school record five shutouts, 2.99 ERA and 148 strikeouts in 180 1/3 innings.
 
Schulz enjoyed an excellent first season for the Tigers, finishing second on the team with a .330 batting average, with five doubles, and four stolen bases, while manning the hot corner. Schulz also finished second on the team with a .450 on-base percentage and finished the season with a 10-game hitting streak, scoring 12 runs over that stretch.
 
Zabel, RIT's second baseman for the last four seasons, enjoyed an excellent 2016 season, leading the Liberty League with a RIT single-season record 24 stolen bases and 29 walks (second most in one season at RIT), while hitting .313 with a team-best 36 runs scored. In the field, Zabel recorded a sparkling .964 fielding percentage in 197 chances. He recorded 14 multiple-hit games on the season and tied a RIT single-game record with four stolen bases on May 8 against Bard. Overall, Zabel hit .320 with a .423 on-base percentage, with career totals of 138 hits, 100 runs scored (tenth most at RIT), 67 walks (tied for fourth most at RIT), and 57 stolen bases (second most at RIT).
 
Little, a 2015 All-Liberty League first team selection, finished 3-4 this season with 40 strikeouts and just 12 walks with three complete games, firing 57 1/3 innings. He fired a complete-game five-hitter with a season-best nine strikeouts in a 2-1 win over Clarkson on March 25. In four seasons, Little finished 13-7 with a 3.83 ERA with 107 strikeouts in 162 innings pitched.
 
Reed started eight games on the mound in 2016, going 2-3 with a 4.35 ERA with 44 strikeouts in 50 innings pitched. On April 30, Reed threw his first collegiate shutout, allowing four hits with strikeouts in a 5-0 win over University of Rochester. He struck out at least six batters in five starts this season.
 
Zeglen enjoyed a strong first season with the Tigers, hitting .296 with eight doubles, four triples, a home run and 21 RBIs in 37 games, while serving primarily as the RIT shortstop. On May 7, he tied the RIT single-game record with two triples in a win over Bard. Zeglen recorded 14 multiple-hit games.

The Tigers finished the 2016 season with an 18-22 overall record, finishing fifth in the Liberty League standings with a 12-12 mark.
