ROCHESTER, NY – Senior
Hailey Burkhart (Underhill, VT/Mt. Mansfield Union) of the RIT women's track and field team and freshman
Ethan Maguire (Penfield, NY/Penfield) of the men's track and field squad, will represent the university at the 2016 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships, which will take place on Friday, March 11 and Saturday, March 12 from the Bear Athletic Center in Grinnell, Iowa.
Burkhart will represent the Tigers in the indoor pentathlon. It is her first appearance at the national championship, having just missed a spot in last year's outdoor championship. Earlier this season, Burkhart broke her own record in the event twice, first with 3,168 points at the Brockport Golden Eagle Multi and Invitational on Jan. 29, and then with 3,273 points in winning the NYSCTC Championship on Feb. 26-27. Burkhart was the RIT Female Athlete of the Week on Feb. 2 and has the 13th best score in the pentathlon nationally this season.
Maguire will compete in the pole vault for the Tigers for the first time. On Feb. 26, Maguire recorded a season-best leap of 4.92 meters to win the NYSCTC Championship. That leap is currently the seventh best in Division III this season. On Feb. 20, Maguire was also victorious at the Division I Marc Deneault Invitational at Cornell University with a leap of 4.80 meters. He also won the pole vault at the RIT Tiger Invitational on Feb. 16. Maguire was named the RIT Male Athlete of the Week and Liberty League Rookie of the Week on Feb. 29.
Burkhart will compete in the pentathlon Friday, starting at 11:30 a.m. EST, while Maguire begins the pole vault, at 5:30 p.m., also on Friday.
