Men's lacrosse improves to 5-0 with convincing win at St. John Fisher

Tigers put up season-high 23 goals en route to 45th straight regular season win

PITTSFORD, NY -- The No. 3 RIT men's lacrosse team improved to 5-0 with a 23-3 win at St. John Fisher College (2-2) in non-conference action from Growney Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers have now won 45 straight regular season games dating back to the 2013 season.

RIT led 7-0 after the first quarter, 12-1 at halftime, and out scored the Cardinals 11-2 in the second half to cruise home for the win. The Tigers are 15-3 all-time versus St. John Fisher, including six straight wins in the series.

Shots were 50-26 in favor of RIT, who won the ground ball battle 41-26. The Tigers won 15-of-30 face-offs and went 22-of-24 on clearing attempts. Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy) led a potent RIT offense with six points on four goals and two assists. Chad Levick (Newmarket, Ontario/The Hill Academy) added five points on three goals and two assists, and Braden Wallace (Oakville, Ontario/Abbey Park) added three goals and an assist. Kyle Sterzin (Fairport, NY/Fairport) chipped in a goal and two assists, and Beau Riley (Homer, NY/Homer) had two goals and an assist.

Freshman Aiden Milburn tallied his first four collegiate goals, while Alex Bodin (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Dr. Charles Best) recorded two goals and had an assist. In all, 11 different Tigers scored goals.

RIT's defense turned in another solid performance holding its fifth straight opponent to under 10 goals. Jarryd Lee (Melbourne, Australia/St. Leonards) got the win in net, playing the first half and making six saves. Jon Berg (Chester, NJ/Mendham) played the third quarter and into the fourth, making four saves, and Michael Sztorc (Pawlet, VT/Burr & Burton Academy) played the final 9:55 and made two saves. RIT forced the Cardinals into nine turnovers, led by Matt Hossack (Port Perry, Ontario/Port Perry) who had two. Jakob Krzyston (Bedford, NH/Bishop Guertin), Patrick Hannigan (Hanover, MA/Hanover) and Josh Harris (St. Catharines, Ontario/Sir Winston Churchill) combined for 11 ground balls and two caused turnovers.

The Tigers came out firing in the first quarter, blanking the Cardinals 7-0. Lee and Wallace each scored twice in the quarter, while Hossack, Wallace, Levick and Dan LoBosco (South Salem, NY/John Jay) each had a goal in the quarter.

Lee and Levick scored a pair of goals apiece in the second quarter, while Riley added a goal and Sterzin dished out two assists for the Tigers in the frame. Matthew Condon got St. John Fisher on the board at 13:59 of the second quarter on a drive to the net from midfield.

Fisher scored the first two goals of the third quarter when Nick Papayanakos and Condon scored early on. The Tigers shut out the Cardinals the rest of the third quarter and the entire fourth quarter. The Tigers scored seven times in the third on goals from Wallace, Sterzin, Bodin, Milburn and Riley. Bodin and Milburn each tallied twice in the quarter.

Brendan MacDonald (Georgetown, ON/Trinity-Pawling) opened the scoring in the fourth quarter, and Ben Tackett (Butler, PA/The Kiski School) tallied his first of the season. Milburn added two more goals in the fourth quarter to make it a 23-3 final.

RIT hits the road for a pair of games at the 2016 Green Turtle Classic hosted by Stevenson University this weekend. The Tigers face No. 14 Lynchburg College on Friday, March 18 at 5:30 p.m., and No. 5 Cabrini on Saturday, March 19 at 5:30 p.m.
