GENEVA, NY – The RIT men's crew team opened the 2016-2017 season on Saturday at the Challenge on the Canal hosted by William Smith College. Participating crews included Buffalo, Ithaca College, St. John Fisher College and the University of Rochester. The Tigers fielded a varsity eight and two novice eights, racing against the clock on the 4.4-kilometer Cayuga-Seneca Canal course.
The varsity eight earned the Tigers their first win of the day.

Spencer Gasiorowski (Milwaukee, WI/Whitefish Bay) posted a time of 14:20.7. Ithaca, almost seven seconds back, and Rochester rounded out the top three.
The Tigers had two novice eights make their collegiate racing debut, finishing first and second in the three boat field. RIT's first novice eight of

Andrew DeVries (Gansevoort, NY/Saratoga Springs),

Andre Webster (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima),
Jakob Kobajlo (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn Technical), Jakob Southern,
Cole Hornbeck (Fallston, MD/Fallston) and
Colin Hurley () recorded a time of 17:30 for second, finishing more than a minute ahead of third place Buffalo.
The Tigers return to action Saturday at the Head of the Genesee in Rochester, NY.
