ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT baseball team introduced "Tigers K Cancer", a tremendous fundraising initiative during the 2015 season that generated over $5,000 for the American Brain Tumor Association.
Tigers K Cancer was founded following the loss of two members of the RIT baseball Community. Lori Noreman, mother of former RIT pitcher
Seth Noreman (Old Bethpage, NY/Old Bethpage-JFK), passed away in early 2014 and Karen Nelson, aunt of current Tiger hurler
David Nitsch (Penfield, NY/Penfield) passed away in 2015.
Led by Nitsch and senior captain
CJ Bolorin (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta), among others, members of the Tigers reached out to local businesses and individuals looking for pledges for each strikeout recorded by RIT pitching in 2015. In return for donations, the team offered a certificate of thanks recognizing goodwill towards the RIT community.
In 2015, RIT pitching enjoyed arguably its best season in program history, recording 203 strikeouts in 38 games (5.34 per game), with a donation of $25 per strikeout.
"I am very proud of our team to get involved in such a great charity event," said RIT head coach
Rob Grow. "The team responded with one of the best pitching seasons in RIT history."
The American Brain Tumor Association was the first national organization committed to funding brain tumor research. For over 40 years, the ABTA has been providing resources to support the needs of brain tumor patients and caregivers, as well as the critical funding of research. "It's important that we attempt to use our status as a team to make an impact off the field," said Nitsch, a sophomore business management major. "We are extremely thankful for the opportunity to give back and for the support of donors who have made this foundation possible. We look forward to growing in the future and continuing to make a difference in the lives of others."
The Tigers finished the 2015 season with a 23-15 record and advanced to the Liberty League Championship game for the first time in program history.
