ROCHESTER, NY – RIT wrestling assistant coach
Jason Bovenzi was inducted into the 2015 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Hall of Fame on Thursday, March 12 at the annual Hall of Fame Banquet in Hershey, Pa. The induction ceremony took place the night before the NCAA Division III Championships begin.
Bovenzi, who will be inducted as a wrestler, will join Mike Jacoutot of The College of New Jersey and Cody Koenig of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, along with coaches Scott Whirley of Augsburg College and Jim Miller of North Central College for the NWCA Hall of Fame Class of 2015.
Bovenzi was a standout collegiate wrestler both at St. Lawrence University and Ithaca College, advancing to the NCAA Championship four times. He was a three-time All-American and two-time National Champion in 1993 and 1995. In his final season at Ithaca in 1994-95, Bovenzi won his second straight national title at 190 lbs., finishing with an undefeated record.
Originally from the suburb of Greece in Rochester, Bovenzi was also a standout on the mats at Greece Athena High School. He is a member of both the Greece Athena and Section V Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Bovenzi is in his second season as an assistant at RIT in 2014-15. He assists
Scott Stever in all aspects of the program, including recruiting and match day management.
RIT wrestlers
Brad Mayville (Marion, NY/Wayne) and
Tory Cain (Ontario, NY/Wayne) will represent the Tigers at the 2015 NCAA Championships in Hershey on March 13-14. Both wrestlers are 28-5 this season.
