ROCHESTER, NY - The accolades continue to roll in for senior distance runner
Matt Giannino (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) of the RIT men's track and field team, as he was named the 2015 Liberty League Indoor Track Performer of the Year on March 20. He was also the 2013 and 2014 Liberty League Cross Country Runner of the Year and 2014 Outdoor Track Performer of the Year.
Giannino, the 2015 USTFCCCA Atlantic Region Indoor Track and Field Male Track Athlete of the Year, earned All-American honors in the 3,000- and 5,000-meters at the 2015 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 13-14. Giannino placed seventh in the 3,000-meters with a time of 8:19.00, just missing his school record time of 8:13.99, set earlier in the season. He was sixth in the 5,000-meters at the NCAA Championships in a time of 14:34.62. Giannino had the fastest time in Division III this season in the 5,000-meters, setting the school record on Jan. 31, crushing a 21-year old school record at the Division I John Thomas Terrier Classic hosted by Boston University.
A 17-time Liberty League Male Track Athlete of the Week, Giannino won the mile run at the Liberty League Championships on Feb. 14, leading from start to finish to earn the victory by just under two seconds in a time of 4:19.40. He also finished fifth in the 800-meters, despite running in the second of four heats with a time of 1:59.46. Giannino was also part of the winning distance medley relay team that smashed the Liberty League record in a time of 10:37.24.
The outdoor season begins for Giannino and the Tigers on Thursday, April 2, as they compete at the University of Rochester Alumni Invitational that gets underway with throws at 2 p.m. and track events an hour later.
