WEBSTER, NY - The RIT men's swimming and diving team broke a relay record Saturday en route to a sixth place finish at the 2015 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) Championships, held at the Webster Aquatic Center. RIT finished with a team score of 695 points, while winner Stevens finished with 1,567.5 points. In addition,
Cliff Devries was named the 2015 UNYSCSA Diving Coach of the Meet.
RIT's 400-yard freestyle relay team of
Steven Paine (York, PA/Dallastown Area),
Sam Shpuntoff (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis),
Ryan Facchine (Fairview, PA/Fairview) and
Derek Brown (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood) broke the school record last year, finishing in a time of 3:08.03 placing fifth overall.
John Tellgren (Anoka, MN/Anoka) and
Matt DePalo (Franklin, MA/Xaverian Brothers) placed second and third, respectively, in the 3-meter diving event. Tellgren came home second with a final score of 542.50, while DePalo was third with a final score of 532.75. Both will compete at the NCAA Regional Diving Championships next weekend.
Facchine placed tenth in the 100-yd. freestyle, finishing in a time of 47.35. Brown was 13th in a time of 47.90.
Freshman
John Stelmack (Toccoa, GA/Stephens County) continued his fine performance at the championships, placing seventh in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:11.32.
Alex Madar (Suffern, NY/Suffern) finished 12th in a time of 2:11.69.
RIT will await to see who will compete in the NCAA Division III Championships that take place March 18-21 in Shenendoah, Texas.
