Complete Ithaca Invitational ResultsITHACA, NY -- The RIT wrestling team opened the 2015-16 campaign with a sixth place finish at the 2015 Ithaca Invitational. RIT finished sixth out of 12 teams with 68.0 points. Freshmen
Dempsey King (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) (149 lbs.) and
John Donohue (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) (165) along with sophomore
Sam Weinger (Blooming Grove, NY/Washingtonville) (285) each placed fourth in their respective weight classes to pace the Tigers. Host Ithaca won the meet with 163 teams points, while Stevens Institute of Technology placed second.
King had a solid first weekend in his collegiate debut. After a first round bye, King defeated Greg McCrystal of Western New England with a pinfall at 2:45. Saturday, King was defeated by Daniel Pak (Ithaca) 10-6 in the quarterfinals. He rebounded with a 6-5 win over Ian Burke in the consolation semifinals, before falling to Zach Joesph in the third place match, 14-3.After a first round bye, Donohue defeated Stephen Friedman (Stevens Tech), 9-4. He finished Friday with a 15-0 technical fall over Dylan Gifford (Norwich). Donohue lost to nationally-ranked Nick Velez (Ithaca) on Saturday in the semifinals, 12-3. In the consolation semifinals, Donohue defeated Pat McCurdy (Norwich) with a fall at 2:24. Donohue fell to Seth Carter of Daniel Webster, 24-16 in the third place match.
Weinger went 2-0 on Friday at 285 lbs. After a first round bye, Weinger defeated Mitchell Lattuca of Alfred State with a pinfall at 4:45. Jake Benedict of Springfield defeated Weinger with a fall at 2:42. Weinger defeated Santino Pelusi (NYU) in the consolation round, 7-0. He went on to beat Paul Kutler (Norwich), 3-1, before defeating Tyler Maher (Stevens Tech) with a forfeit in the consolation semifinals. In the third place match, Weinger was defeated by Matther Booth (Ithaca), 8-2.
Other wrestlers turned in solid performances for the Tigers. Freshman
Martin Beadle (Holley, NY/Holley) postied a 2-0 record on Friday, defeating Aaron Wolfgang of Stevens Tech, 11-4 in his first round match. He went on to beat Nikolas Hansen of Ithaca, 5-4 to advance to third round. Fellow classmates Isiah Ocasio,
Cole Murphy (West Genesee, NY/Westhill), Ezekial Thomas,
Austin Prince (Nunda, NY/Keshequa),
Kirkland Feeney (Lockport, NY/Lockport), and Mackenzie Callahan all won their first collegiate matches.
Andrew Flanagan (Holley, NY/Holley) had a good first day at 125 lbs., winning two bouts. He opened the tournament with a 7-3 decision over Tim McLinden of Western New England. Flanagan went on to beat Christian Antoine of Springfield, 6-5 in his second round match.Â
RIT returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 14 when they host SUNY Oswego beginning at 1 p.m. on the mats at Clark Gym.
