ROCHESTER, NY -- The No. 1 RIT men's lacrosse team received a first round bye and will play the winner between Ithaca College and Montclair State in the second round of the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship on Saturday, May 10 at Tiger Stadium. RIT will make its 16th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and fifth in as many years.
RIT received the automatic bid to the 2014 tournament with a thrilling 13-11 win over Union College in the Liberty League Championship on Sunday. Junior
Pat Johnston (Norwell, MA/Norwell) made 11 saves in net, earning Tournament MVP honors.
Kyle Aquin (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean De Brebeuf) scored three goals, while
Jack Krzyston (Bedford, NH/Bishop Guertin) (3g, 1a) and
Allister Warren (Toronto, Ontario/Malvern Collegiate Institute) (2g, 2a) each had four points.
RIT has been ranked first in the USILA Division III poll for ten straight weeks. Last season, RIT made its first-ever appareance in the NCAA Championship Game, defeating three top-five teams (Cabrini, Tufts and SUNY Cortland) en route to the title game. Overall, RIT is 14-15 all time in NCAA Tournament games, and has made 13 trips to the national quarterfinals (1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1990, 1994, 1995, 1999, 2000, 2010, 2012, 2013), six trips to the national semifinals (1984, 1985, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2013) and one trip to the championship game (2013).
The Tigers are 18-0 overall this season, and have an impressive 72-7 (.911 winning percentage) record over the last four seasons. The Tigers have won five straight conference championships, including two Empire 8 titles (2010, 2011), and three Liberty League crowns (2012, 2013, 2014).
