ROCHESTER, NY - Six members of the 2014 RIT softball team were honored for their work in the classroom and on the diamond, as senior
Brittany Griffin (Sterling, VA/Park View ), juniors
Brittani Scharlau (Alexander, NY/Alexander),
Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton), and
Kelly Meegan (Bristol, NH/Newfound Regional ), as well as and freshmen
Anna Valentine (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) and
Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) were named 2014 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American Scholar Athletes on Thursday, Oct. 2. The award is bestowed upon any player submitted by a member coach who achieved a 3.50 grade point average or higher during the 2013-14 academic year. Both Griffin, Scharlau, and Wolcott earned the same honor in 2012 and 2013.
Griffin, RIT's third baseman, enjoyed her best season in 2014, leading the team with a .398 batting average to go along with three home runs, 16 runs batted in, 19 runs scored, and 12 doubles, while slugging .593. In the field, Griffin recorded an impressive .951 fielding percentage, while playing the hot corner. She had a hit in all but five contests this season and enjoyed 13 multiple-hit outings. Griffin ends her stellar RIT career second all-time at the university with 13 home runs, tied for fifth with 32 doubles, and tenth with a .527 slugging percentage. She is a career .344 hitter with 134 hits, 69 runs scored, and 55 RBI's.
Scharlau, an outfielder, appeared in 12 contests in 2014 and 29 in three seasons with the Tigers

Wolcott enjoyed another excellent season for the Tigers in 2014, batting .398 with two homers and 17 runs batted in, while playing in all 34 contests. She led the team with 16 walks, 19 runs scored and 11 doubles. Wolcott had an excellent .486 on-base percentage and a .581 slugging percentage. She had a hit in 25 different contests this season, with 10 multiple-hit games. Wolcott, a shortstop, is climbing towards the top-10 in several categories at RIT, with six homers, 64 runs batted in, 99 hits and 33 doubles, with a .343 batting average, .409 on-base percentage, and .540 slugging percentage.
Meegan, who played both outfield and second base, played in 20 games, starting 15 in 2014. She has played in 77 career games in three seasons.
Anna Valentine (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) appeared in 12 games on the mound in 2014, striking out 34 batters in 60 1/3 innings. She earned her first collegiate win over Clarkson.
Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) emerged as RIT's top pitcher in 2014, leading the Tigers in nearly every category. She led the team in wins (5), innings pitched (113 2/3), batters struck out (72), appearances (25), games started (18), and complete games (15). In addition, Valentine had an earned run average of 3.60 in six Liberty League games.
All six student-athletes were also named to the 2013-14 Liberty League All-Academic Team.
