GENEVA, NY - The RIT women's tennis team opened the 2013-14 season with a strong showing at the 2013 ITA Northeast Region Championship hosted by William Smith College on Sept. 28-30.
Maite Vera Antelo (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Mayor San Loranzo) advanced to the third round in the singles bracket and along with
Sara Bjork (Gansevoort, NY/Saratoga Springs) advanced to the semifinals in the doubles bracket.
Vera Antelo began her run in the singles bracket by defeating Ayaka Yoshino of Elmira, 6-2, 6-1 in the first round before dispatching Jessica Schmidt of New Paltz, 6-0, 6-2. In the third round, Vera Antelo suffered her defeat, falling to Brittany LaBruna of William Patterson, 6-2, 3-6, 5-7.
On the doubles side, Vera Antelo and Bjork defeated Haley Kusak and Cristina Nunez of Ithaca 8-5 in the first round before defeating Emma Allen and Tara Criscuolo of The College of New Jersey, 9-7. The duo defeated Madie Benn and Melissa Hirsch of Skidmore, 8-6 in the quarterfinals, before suffering a tough 9-8 loss to Shena Joseph and Jane Selegean of Hunter, 9-8.
Elizabeth McGrail (Rockford, IL/Guilford) lost in the opening round of the singles round, but rebounded to defeat Nicole Riley of The Sage Colleges in the consolation first round, 8-0. McGrail fell to Molly Goodman of Rochester in the second consolation round, 9-7.
RIT concludes its Fall season on Oct. 11-13 at the New York State Championships hosted by Ithaca College.
