RIT women's lacrosse places three on all-conference team; Vakiener earns second straight player of the year honor

ROCHESTER, NY – Three members of the RIT women's lacrosse team were named to the 2013 Liberty League Women's Lacrosse All-Conference team, which was announced on Tuesday. Senior #Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport) was named Liberty League player of the Year for the second straight season and was a first team selection. Freshman (Silver Spring, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel)Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and senior (Silver Spring, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel)Megan Henriksen (Silver Spring, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel)# were second team selections.

Vakiener, RIT's all-time leading scorer, led the Tigers and the conference in scoring with 94 points on 68 goals and 26 assists in 2013. She was first in the league in goals per game (4.53), points per game (6.13) , and second in assists per game (1.60), ground balls per game (3.433 and draw controls per game (5.13). Vakiener, the Empire 8 Player of the Year in 2011, scored at least one goal in all 15 games this season, including a program record nine goals versus Rochester on March 10. A four-time Liberty League Offensive Player of the Week, she finished her career at RIT with 351 career points, 248 career goals, and 103 career assists, all career records at RIT. Vakiener is just outside the top-20 all time in scoring at the Division III level. She is the program's all-time leader with 248 career draw controls and is second all time with 210 career ground balls.

Henriksen, a 2010 All-Empire 8 first team selection, returned after a season-ending injury in 2012 to start all 16 games in 2013. She was second on the team with 16 caused turnovers and fourth with 28 ground balls. Henriksen, a 2010 IWLCA Second Team All-Empire Region selection, tallied three points on two goals and an assist and won 13 draw controls this season. She finished her career at RIT with 74 points on 48 career goals and 26 assists. Henriksen grabbed 129 career ground balls, 94 draw controls and caused 70 turnovers. Her 94 draw controls ranks eighth all-time at RIT.

Sarkis had an outstanding rookie campaign in 2013, finishing second on the team with 60 points on 49 goals and 11 assists. She also had 16 ground balls, 22 draw controls and caused 11 turnovers in 16 games. Sarkis earned Liberty League Rookie of the Week honors back in early March tallying eight goals in two games, including six in a win over Guilford in her first collegiate game. Sarkis closed out the season with eight goals in a come-from-behind win over Clarkson.

RIT finished the season 10-6 and were 5-4 in Liberty League play.
