Four school records fall, as men's track and field rolls to second straight Liberty League Indoor Championship

Four school and Liberty League Championship records fell, as the RIT men's track and field team cruised to victory at the 2013 Liberty League Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by RIT at the Gordon Field House on Saturday evening. RIT finished with 209 points, while St. Lawrence was second with 136 points. Rensselaer was third with 115 points, while Union was fourth with 27 points. Sophomore Jamie Dorren (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) was named the Liberty League Field Athlete of the Meet.

Dorren won the high jump in dramatic fashion breaking his own school mark and conference record with a leap of 2.07 meters. He outlasted Stephen Silber of Rensselaer, who also had the same leap, but Dorren accomplished the jump on fewer attempts to get the win. Currently, it is the fourth best leap in Division III this season. He was also third in the long jump with a leap of 6.66 meters and third in the triple jump at 13.26 meters.

Marquis Moore (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) broke his own school record and conference mark in the triple jump with a leap of 14.47 meters, which is the seventh best leap in Division III this season. He was also second in the long jump with a strong leap of 6.94 meters.

Both Dorren and Moore were bested in the long jump by teammate Andrew Athias (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East), who smashed the RIT and Liberty League record with a leap of 7.20 meters, which is the fifth best in Division III. Athias also tied for fourth in the high jump.

Cameron Lee (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland) broke his own school mark in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing second with a time of 8.32 meters. He was also fourth in the 60-meter dash. Teammate Ben Kelley (Mansfield Center, CT/E.O. Smith ) was also fourth in the 60-meter hurdles, eight hundredths of a second shy of the school mark.

RIT tallied 27 team points in the pole vault, as Joe Cronin (Albany, NY/Bethlehem Central), Nick Perez (Monroe, NY/Monroe Woodbury), and Michael Whelton (Boston, MA/Londonderry) led a 1-2-3 finish. Mike Haynes (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable) won the shot put with an impressive toss of 14.67 meters and won the weight throw with a hurl of 15.83 meters.

RIT's 4 x 200-meter relay team of Lee, Zach Pfister (Waterbury, VT/Harwood), Kelley, and Drake Wilson (Monterey, CA/York) won in a time of 1:32.50, while the distance medley team of Jon Pelzar (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow), #C.J. Brunner#, Jeremy Cook (Rochester, NY/Aquinas), and Andrew Bernardo (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks High School South) pulled away to win by 11 seconds in 10:43.24.

Brunner and Adam Irr (Newfane, NY/Newfane) were second and third, respectively, in the 800-meters, finishing second one-hundredths of a second apart in times of 1:59.32 and 1:59.38.

Matt Giannino (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy), Mike Kurvach (Victor, NY/Victor), and Irr led a 2-3-4 finish in the 800-meters. Giannino recorded a strong time of 4:17.62, missing the top spot by just 33 one-hundredths of a second. Kurvach and Giannino flipped finishes in the 5,000-meters, with Kurvach placing second and Giannino third. Kurvach recorded a time of 15:15.48. Mike Krenzer was fourth.

Whelton was fourth in the 200-meters, while Mike Andrews (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) was fourth in the 400-meters.

The Tigers are right back in action on Friday, as they host the Tiger Invitational which gets underway at 4 p.m.
