RIT's Kayla Wheeler selected to Capital One Academic All-District III Team

ROCHESTER, NY -- Junior forward #Kayla Wheeler (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa)#, of the RIT Women's Basketball team, was selected to the 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-District III Women's Basketball Team. Wheeler is now eligible for the 2012-13 Captial One Academic All-American team.

Wheeler has started all 17 games for RIT this season, averaging 23.0 minutes per game. She is shooting .467 from the field, including .417 from three point range and is third on the team averaging 9.1 points per game. She is second on the team in rebounding, averaging 4.7 per game, and is hitting free throws as a 74.2 percent clip, while averaging 1.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game. She tallied a season-high 18 pts on 8-of-14 shooting vs. Rensselaer, and has scored in double figures in 8-of-17 games this season.

In the classroom and in the community, Wheeler has been just as busy. A Biomedical Engineering major at RIT, Wheeler has been named to the Dean's List at RIT all seven quarters since 2010. She volunteers at Blossom Nursing Home in Rochester, and started "Fight to be Healed" at RIT to raise money for pediatric cancer patients at Golisano Children's Hospital She also volunteers at Habitat for Humanity.

Wheeler and the Tigers will host a pair of Liberty League contests beginning on Friday, Feb. 1 when the Tigers host Skidmore College at 6 pm on the floor of Clark Gym.
