ROCHESTER, NY - Former RIT football head coach
Tom Coughlin will look to earn his second Super Bowl Championship, as his New York Giants take on the New England Patriots in the National Football League's championship game of the 2011 season, Sunday evening in Indianapolis.
Coughlin led the RIT Football team for four seasons, from 1970-73, leading the Tigers to a 16-15-2 record in his first coaching gig. He left RIT following the 1973 season to head back to his alma mater, Syracuse, as the quarterbacks coach. Coughlin spent the next seven seasons with the Orange before heading to Boston College. After three years with the Eagles, he went to the NFL as an assistant coach for three teams over seven seasons, winning a Super Bowl ring in the 1990 season as quarterbacks coach of the New York Giants.
Coughlin's next coaching job came with Boston College, where he served as head coach for three seasons from 1991-93. His first NFL head coaching job came with the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars from 1994-02. Coughlin led the Jaguars to four-straight playoff berths from 1996-1999, reaching the AFC Championship Game twice.
In 2004 he signed with the New York Giants to become the team's 17th head coach in its storied history. After winning six games in his first season, Coughlin led the Giants to four-straight playoff appearances. In 2007, he won his second Super Bowl ring, first as a head coach, defeating the then-undefeated New England Patriots 17-14 in one of the greatest games in NFL history.
Coughlin has a 153-121 career record in the NFL, including an 11-7 mark in the postseason. With a victory on Sunday, he would become the 13th coach to win multiple Super Bowls.
