Dorren ties 36-year old school record, as men's track and field enjoys several excellent finishes in season opening meet

ROCHESTER, NY -
The RIT men's track and field team opened up the 2012-13 indoor season with an excellent showing at the RIT Early Season Invitational, held at the Gordon Field House on Thursday evening. The Tigers were one of eight teams competing and enjoyed a handful of excellent finishes. Sophomore Jamie Dorren (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) tied a 36-year old school record in the high jump.

Dorren easily won the event and equalled the record, set by Willie Barkley in 1976. Dorren was also third in the triple jump with a leap of 13.18 meters.

Marquis Moore (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili), Andrew Athias (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East), and Kenton Connors (Temple Hills, MD/Forestville Military Academy) finished first, second, and third in the long jump. Moore won the event with a leap of 6.88 meters, while Athias was right behind at 6.70 meters. Mike Haynes (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable) was second in the shot put with a toss of 13.81 meters.

RIT's relay teams enjoyed a tremendous evening. The 4 x 200-meter team of Mike Andrews (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott), Ben Kelley (Mansfield Center, CT/E.O. Smith ), Cameron Lee (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland), and Drake Wilson (Monterey, CA/York) won in a time of 1:35.08. The 4 x 800-relay team of Benner, Mike Kurvach (Victor, NY/Victor), Zach Nelson (Victor, NY/Victor), and Kyle Reid (Farmington, NY/Victor) won easily in 8:36.58. The 4 x 400-meter relay team placed second overall.

On the track side, #C.J. Brunner# won the 500-meter dash in 1:09.80. Matt Giannino (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) won the 1,000-meters in 2:31.81, while Adam Irr (Newfane, NY/Newfane) placed third in 2:36.17.

Kurvach won the mile in a solid time of 4:28.15, while Ben Casto (Fork Union, VA/Fluvanna County) was second in the 5,000-meter run in 15:46.10. Teammate Mike Peterson (Newtown, PA/Newtown) was right behind in fourth with a time of 15:47.27.

Cameron Lee (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland) placed third overall in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.61 seconds.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday, January 12, 2013, as they host the RIT invitational at the Gordon Field House. The meet gets underway at 10 a.m.
