Wrestling finishes 12th at New York State Invitational

ITHACA, NY - The RIT wrestling team placed 12th out of 15 teams at the New York State Collegiate Championships, hosted by Cornell on Saturday and Sunday. Freshman #Tory Cain (Ontario, NY/Wayne)# was RIT's best finisher, placing fourth at 165 lbs. The Tigers tallied 28.5 team points.

Cain finished 4-2 over the weekend. He had two victories on Saturday, pinning Frankie Provenzano of SUNY Oneonta at 4:34 and Jesse Capello Colon of Hunter at 1:24. On Sunday, Cain recorded pins over David Lyons of Niagara and Justin James of Brockport, before falling to Jon Conroy of SUNY Cortland, 7-4 in the third place match.

#Jake Harvey (LeRoy, NY/LeRoy)# had one win in the 141 lbs. weight class had a victory over Sean Murphy by decision, 6-4. At 157 lbs., #Sean Sercu (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney)# defeated Sam Friedfeld of NYU, 6-2. #Tim Thurnau (Nampa, ID/Nampa)# defeated Joe Friedel of Oswego, 6-1, in the 197 lbs. weight class. At 285 lbs., #Nick Stewart (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin)# pinned Branden Jones of Oswego in 6:48.

In the "B" brackets, #Brandon Delmonte (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford)# went 1-2 at 125 lbs. with a consolation round 6-2 win over Kevin O'Hagan of Brockport. #Ben Johnstone (West Henrietta, NY/Rush-Hunrietta)# also went 1-2 on the day with a win in the consolation round over Patrick Sullivan of Cornell, 7-1, in the 174 lbs. weight class. At 285 lbs., #Mikhail Solomonik (Penfield, NY/Penfield) defeated his teammate (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown)Eddie McBride (Germantown, MD/Northwest)# in a consolation match with a pin at 3:27.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday at the Wilkes Quad Meet.
