Men's track and field shares 2011 Empire 8 Championship with Ithaca

ROCHESTER, NY –
The RIT men's track and field team shared the 2011 Empire 8 Championship with Ithaca at Gordon Field House on Sunday. Both RIT and Ithaca finished with 159 points. Five different individuals and one relay team won events for RIT.

All first and second place finishers earn All-Empire 8 honors.

Mike Kurvach (Victor, NY/Victor) won the 5,000-meter run by 17 seconds, in 15:13.63.

The relay team of John Quatroche (East Lyme. CT/East Lyme), Mike Ballow (Clarence, NY/Clarence), John Holleran (West Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken), and Thomas Benner won the distance relay by 19 seconds in 10:39.90. Quatroche and Holleran were also first and second in the 800-meter run. Quatroche won by 13 hundredths of a second in 2:01.03.

Brian Walker (Brockport, NY/Brockport) enjoyed a strong day for the Tigers, setting a new Empire 8 record by winning the weight throw in 16.89 meters. He led a 1-2-3 finish for RIT in that event, as Mike Haynes (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable), and Troy Johnson (Kingston, NY/Kingston) also threw well. Walker was also third in the shot put.

Ryan Warner (Skillman, NJ/Montgomery) won the 400-meters in 50.78. Michael Dempsey won the pole vault for the second straight year, with a leap of 4.70 meters.

RIT's 4 x 400-meter relay team of Matt Marion (Lima, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima), Marc Priddy (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder), Cameron Lee (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland), and Warner placed second in 3:26.05.

Seth Kane (Mount Upton, NY/Sidney) placed third in the high jump, while Matt Giannino (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) placed third in the mile, while Lee placed third in the 55-meters hurdles. Zach Miller (Ironville, PA/Hempfield) was third in the 5,000-meters.

The Tigers return to action next weekend as some athletes will head to the New Balance Invitational, and others, the Syracuse Invitational.
