ONEONTA, NY - A handful of RIT track and field athletes competed at the Oneonta State May Meet on Thursday afternoon, trying to improve their times or leaps in a last chance attempt to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Junior
Matt Marion (Lima, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) won the 400-meter hurdles with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 53.14 seconds. Sophomore
MIke Kurvach (Victor, NY/Victor) provisionally qualified for the NCAA's with a strong time of 9:24.14 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Mike Dempsey (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) won the pole vault with a leap of 5.05 meters. He attempted a career-best 5.18 meters, but could not convert.
On the women's side, freshman
Belina Hooper (Meaford, Ontario/St. Mary's) just missed setting a school record in the javelin, with a toss of 36.52 meters. Senior
Jamie Morey (LeRoy, NY/Notre Dame) threw the hammer 45.74 meters, and discus 38.68 meters. Jennifer Adams had a leap of 5.34 meters in the long jump.
RIT athletes will now await NCAA Championship bids. The NCAA Championships will start on Thursday, May 27 in Berea, Ohio.
