PHOENIX, AZ - The RIT baseball team opened the 2010 season by falling to St. John's (Minn.) University by a score of 14-1 at the RussMatt Invitational on Monday afternoon.
RIT mustered just four hits in the loss.
Geoff Dornes (Landsville, PA/Hempfield) was 2-for-4.
Ryan Campbell (Brockport, NY/Brockport) scored RIT's lone run in the bottom of the third inning. He singled, stole second base, and scored on a single by
Ben Robertson (Mecklenburg, NY/Trumansburg).
Dornes took the loss on the mound, allowing four earned runs in four innings of work.
Dan Schuster (Livonia, NY/Livonia) and
Frank DiPinto (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) combined to throw 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief with five strikeouts.
St. John's scored two runs in the second, three in the third, and single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, before exploding for six in the seventh.
Andrew Gurbata was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI for St. John's (3-0)
The Tigers and Johnnies meet once again on Tuesday for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. EST.
