Men's track finish fourth at the NYSCTC Championships

ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT men's track and field team placed fourth overall out of the nine teams at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference Championships. The Tigers finished fourth with a team score of 119 points. Rensselaer won the title with a total team score of 159 points.

Friday's action included Freshmen Cameron Lee (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland) and Chris Webb (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township) qualified for the final round of the 55-meter hurdles on Saturday. Lee crossed the line in a time of 7.96, not only qualifying him for finals, but also for the ECAC Championships. Webb was close behind, finishing in a time of 8.02 seconds.

In the open 55-meter dash, Webb, along with Zachary Loughery (Wantage, NJ/High Point) and Anthony Schiavone (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) qualified for the finals. Webb finished in a time of 6.64 seconds while Loughery and Schivone both ran 6.72. Junior Brecht Moulin (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough) qualified for the finals in the 400-meter dash, finishing in a time of 50.52 seconds.

The Distance Medley Relay team of Adam Irr (Newfane, NY/Newfane), Skylar Korb (/), John Holleran (West Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken), and Mike Kurvachconsisting won their race in a time of 10:24.94.

On the field events side, there were two third place finishes as well as one fourth place finish. Junior Brian Walker (Brockport, NY/Brockport) placed third in the weight throw with a toss of 15.23 meters. Freshman Marquis Moore (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) (6.79 meteres) placed third in the long jump while fellow teammate Chris Libera (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) (6.68 meters) placed fourth. Libera's jump qualifies him for the ECAC Championship meet.

The 4x200-meter relay of Moulin, Jon Sealander (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal), Anthony Schiavone (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro), and Webb placed second in the event in a time of 1:31.56.

Saturday saw sophomore Mike Dempsey (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) had an outstanding day as he set the school record for the second time this season in the pole vault. Dempsey won the event as well, soaring to a championship record height of 4.91 meters. Chris Mieney (Greece, NY/Byron Bergen) placed seventh in the event with a height of 4.10 meters.
Freshman Marquis Moore (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) won the triple jump with a leap of 13.84 meters.

Freshmen Mike Haynes (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable) and Steve Arni (Nottingham, PA/Oxford Area) picked up some points for the tigers placing seventh and eighth in the shot put. Haynes placed seventh with a toss of 12.67 meters, while Arni placed eighth with a throw of 12.18 meters.

Senior Nick Cox (Norfolk, VA/Norfolk) placed fourth in the mile with a time of 4:25.57. Freshman Adam Irr (Newfane, NY/Newfane) also placed sixth with a time of 4:28.96.

Freshmen Chris Webb (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township) and Cameron Lee (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 55-meter hurdle finals. Webb crossed the line in a time of 8.09 seconds with Lee on his tail crossing the line in a time of 8.10 seconds. Loughery, Webb, and Schiavone placed fifth, seventh, and eighth respectively. Loughery finished the race in a time of 6.74 seconds, while Webb finished with a time of 6.82 seconds and Schiavone with a time of 6.88 seconds.

Junior Brecht Moulin (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough) finished second in the 400-meter finals with a time of 50.27 seconds. Sophomore Sam Smolenski (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) placed fifth in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:58.78.

James Granata (Armonk, NY/Byram Hills) and John Holleran (West Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken) bhad great races in the 1,000-meter run. Granata placed fifth with a time of 2:34.48 while Holleran placed sixth with a time of 2:35.42. These two times qualify both athletes for the ECAC Championship Meet.

Granata and Holleran later teamed up with Caryl Brunner (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore West) and Sam Smolenski (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) to place second in the 4x800-meter relay in a time of 8:15.14.

Sophomore Mike Kurvach (Victor, NY/Victor) placed sixth in the 3,000-meter race in a time of 8:50.03.

The 4x400-meter relay of Moulin, Skylar Korb (/), Lee, and Webb rounded out the day's competition placing second in a time of 3:24.32.

Those who have qualified for the ECAC Championship Meet will be travelling to North Hampton, Mass. next week to compete for the meet.
