ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT Men’s track and field team faced placed second at the 2010 Empire 8 Championships held at the Gordon Field House on the campus at RIT on Sunday afternoon. Ithaca took the title with a team score of 180 points while RIT placed second with a score of 138.
There were some outstanding performances throughout the day. The Distance Medley Relay team of Caryl Brunner,
Joe Casey (Rochester, NY/Webster Thomas),
John Holleran (West Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken), and
Mike Kurvach (Victor, NY/Victor) led the way for the tigers, winning the race in a time of 10:35.80.
Brian Walker (Brockport, NY/Brockport) also won the first field event of the day, tossing the 35-pound weight 14.95 meters to secure the first place position.
There were several other first place finishes throughout the day as well. Sophomore
Sam Smolenski (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) won the 800-meter race in an impressive time of 1:59.06. Junior
Mike Dempsey (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) won the pole vault, soaring to a new school record height of 4.75 meters. He break his own school record that he set earlier this season.
Mike Kurvach (Victor, NY/Victor) picked up a second win in the 5,000-meters, smoking the competition and taking the win with a time of 15:26.35.
Sophomore
Mike Bradley (Penfield, NY/Penfield) also helped to score points in the 5,000-meters, placing third with a time of 15:50.69.
Junior
Brecht Moulin (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough) and senior
Jon Sealander (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) placed second and third in the 400-meter dash. Moulin came in with a time of 50.50 while Sealander finished in 50.76 seconds. The two later teamed up with
Chris Webb (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township) and
Sam Smolenski (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) in the 4x400-meter relay, placing second with a time of 3:27.96.
Freshman
Marquis Moore (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) had an exceptional day, placing second in the triple jump and third in the long jump. Moore jumped 13.72 meters in the triple jump and 6.63 meters in the long jump.
Other notable performances came from junior
Zach Loughery (Wantage, NJ/High Point), freshman
Chris Webb (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township), and freshman
Cameron Lee (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland). Loughery crushed his own school record again in the 55-meter dash, finishing third in a time of 6.60 seconds. Webb and Lee battled it out the 55-meter hurdles, placing third and fourth respectively. Webb out leaned Lee to take the third place spot with a time of 8.40 seconds while Lee secured fourth with a time of 8.41 seconds.
The men’s track and field team will be back in action Saturday as they travel to Syracuse, NY for the Syracuse Invitational.
