Women's basketball uses stout defense to defeat Hartwick

Tigers hold Hartwick to 16 percent shooting

ROCHESTER, NY –
Sophomore center #Sharon Dennis (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool)# nearly recorded her second triple-double, leading four Tigers in double figures, as the RIT women's basketball team (8-6, 2-3 Empire 8) rolled to a 65-46 win over Hartwick (4-11, 2-6 Empire 8) in Empire 8 action before a packed house at Clark Gym on Friday.

RIT's defense was the story, holding Hartwick to 16.1 percent shooting (10-for-62) from the field. The Hawks were just 3-for-33 from 2-point range. RIT out-rebounded Hartwick by an astounding 62-36 margin. The 62 rebounds were three shy of an 18-year old school record.

Dennis scored 12 points, pulled down 15 boards, and blocked eight shots for her eighth double-double of the season.

Sophomore forward #Anne Wapshare (Blasdell, NY/Immaculata Academy)# scored 11 points and grabbed seven boards. She scored all nine of her first half points on consecutive 3-pointers 1:35 apart that extended a 21-16 RIT lead to 30-16.

Freshman guard #Leslie Havens (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton)# added 11 points, four rebounds, and three steals. #Brianna O'Dell (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenedehowa)# scored 10 points and added 10 boards, seven of which came on the offensive end. #Shannon Bean (Manchester, ME/Maranacook Community) chipped in with eight points on 4-of-5 shooting. (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius)Danielle Furman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport)# dished out seven assists.

Jalicia Connell led Hartwick with 15 points and five boards.

The Tigers did turn the ball over 24 times, but shot 44 percent from thefield.

RIT led 32-21 at halftime. The Tigers got off to a splendid start from the field, hitting 12 of its first 18 shots from the field over the opening 15 minutes. Hartwick struggled mightily from the field, making just 6-of-33 first half shots (18.2 percent). The Hawks were just 1-for-20 on 2-point attempts during the opening 20 minutes.

RIT did turn the ball over 13 times to just six for Hartwick in the first half, but had 29 rebounds .

Hartwick leads the all-time series between the schools, 29-7. Since the start of the 2006-07 season, RIT is 4-3 against the Hawks.

Tonight was the third annual Destler Orange Hair Challenge. Students were challenged to fill Clark Gym. If the gym was completely full, RIT President Dr. Bill Destler would dye his hair orange at halftime of the men's game. The gym was about three-fourths full for the women's game.  Destler did put orange streaks in his hair.

RIT is right back in action on Saturday, with a home game against E8 foe Elmira. The contest begins at 2 p.m.
