KEUKA PARK, NY -- The sixth seeded RIT women's basketball team was defeated by #3 St. John Fisher College 66-57 in the first round of the 17th Annual Wendy's College Classic. The loss evens the Tiger's record to 5-5 on the season.
RIT will face the loser between #2 University of Rochester and #7 Keuka College on Thursday, January 14 at 3:30 pm at the Palestra on the campus of the University of Rochester.
RIT trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half before a run midway through the half cut Fisher's lead to four points. Senior
Danielle Furman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) nailed a three pointer with 2:26 to play which cut the Cardinal's lead to 57-53.
The Cardinals outscored the Tigers 9-4 over the final 2:36 to go on to the win.
The Tigers also trailed by 12 in the first half, but outscored St. John Fisher 12-2 over the final 5:23 trailing 29-27 at the half.
RIT shot 33.3 percent from the field on 19-of-57 shooting. RIT was 6-of-19 from behind the three point line and out rebounded the Cardinals 42-40. The Tigers turned the ball over 28 times.
Furman led RIT with 14 points and dished out five assists. Freshman
Leslie Havens (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) added 11 points and
Brianna O'Dell (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenedehowa) chipped in 10 points off the bench.
Sharon Dennis (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) scored just three points and grabbed eight points.
