ROCHESTER, NY - Sophomore
Lindsey Gibson (Glastonbury, CT/Mercy) defeated Katie Catalano in three games at fourth singles, 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 to earn the decisive fifth point, and lead the RIT women's tennis team (2-2, 2-1 Empire 8) to a dramatic, 5-4 win over St. John Fisher (3-1, 2-1 Empire 8) under the lights on Thursday at RIT Tennis Courts.
With the match tied at 3, RIT's
Julie Burkett (McDonald, PA/West Allegheny) secured a 6-1, 6-7, 6-1 win over Marissa Rotondo at sixth singles. St. John Fisher's Katelyn Smith earned a three-set win at fifth singles to tie the match at 4, setting the stage for Gibson's dramatic win.
"What a match," said RIT Head Coach Krystina Bachner. "The girls played with a lot of heart. They showed patience, fought through adversity, and believed in themselves."
Junior
Amanda Berg (Mendham, NJ/Mendham) won at first singles, and paired with
Alexis Stanley (Vestal, NY/Vestal) to earn an 8-2 win at first doubles.
Berg has never lost a singles match in Empire 8 play. She is 12-0 all time in Empire 8 singles play.
Junior
Michele Caporali (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) secured a 6-1, 6-1 win at third singles.
The match began at 4 p.m., but ended under the lights at 8:20 p.m.
RIT is right back in action on Saturday, as host Utica in an Empire 8 conference contest. The match gets underway at 1 p.m.
