Emily McPherson (Pompey, NY/Pompey) (Pompey, NY/Fabius-Pompey) shattered the RIT single-season record for home runs in a season, as the RIT softball team (18-16) cruised to a doubleheader sweep over SUNY Morrisville (5-33) on a hot and windy Monday afternoon at RIT Field. The Tigers scored a season-high 14 runs en route to a 14-0 win in game one, then took game two, 8-0. Both games went five innings.
The Tigers ripped 24 hits on the afternoon (16 in game one, eight in game two) after slamming 16 hits in game two on Saturday against Utica.
McPherson hit her seventh and eighth home runs of the season in game one. Her second homer, a line-drive over the right center field fence in the bottom of the third inning, broke the RIT single-season record of seven, originally set by Michelle Halleran in 2001. McPherson had three RBI in game one, then was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and two RBI in game two.
Carlissa Cole (Alden, NY/Alden) (Alden, NY/Alden) hit a three-run home run in each game, giving her five this season. Cole hit a line-drive over the left-center field fence in the second inning of game, then drilled an opposite field shot to right center field in the bottom of the first inning in game two.
Jessica French (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton Central) (Springwater, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) hit her first home run of the season in game one. French was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a homer, three RBI and two runs scored in game one.
Shannon McCormick (Auburn, NY/Auburn) (Auburn, NY/Auburn) was 3-for-3 with three bunt singles. #
Michelle Tabisz (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch)# (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a run batted in.
Jen Hayden (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) was 2-for-2 with two runs scored in game one.
RIT scored three times in the first, seven runs in the second, once in the third and three more in the fourth.
Cole picked up her 12th win of the season on the mound, allowing two hits in two innings.
Morgan Stearns (Springboro, PA/Conneaut Valley) (Springboro, PA/Conneault Valley) threw three hitless innings in relief, striking out five.
In game two, the Tigers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first on the strength of a run-scoring double by McPherson and a three-run homer by Cole. RIT scored single runs in the second, third and fourth to garner the win.
Sarah Hamel (Templeton, MA/Narragansett Regional) (Templeton, MA/Narragansett Regional) picked up the win on the mound for RIT in game two, allowing three hits in three innings of work.
Mary Medino (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) threw two scoreless innings in relief.
The Tigers have won 13 of their last 16 games.
RIT is right back in action on Tuesday, as they host Keuka in a non-conference doubleheader, starting at 3 p.m. It is the regular-season finale for the Tigers.
