ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT baseball team (9-14, 4-4 Empire 8) completed a successful weekend, sweeping a doubleheader from E8 rival Stevens (11-15, 3-7 Empire 8 on Saturday afternoon at RIT Field. The Tigers won game one, 5-0 and took game two, 5-4.
Sophomore hurler
Mike Marsillo (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) was sensational on the hill for RIT in game one, scattering five hits in a complete-game shutout. Marsillo did not allow a runner past second base, as he walked three and struck out five batters to record his third win of the season. It was Marsillo's first collegiate shut-out.
The Tigers scored once in the first and twice in both the third and fifth innings to back Marsillo.
Geoff Dornes (Landsville, PA/Hempfield) (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and a run batted in.
Ben Robertson (Mecklenburg, NY/Trumansburg) (Mecklenburg, NY/Trumansburg) had two more hits, giving him seven in his last three games.
Jeremy Tosh (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) (Glenelg, MD/Hempfield),
Raffaele Parisi (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) and
Dave Kernan (North Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) drove in a run apiece for the Tigers.
Ken Meerendonk was 2-for-3 with a double for Stevens. He also took the loss on the mound, allowing seven hits and three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.
In game two, RIT took advantage of three Stevens errors on three consecutive at-bats in the bottom of the third inning to erase a 3-2 deficit and take a 5-3 lead.
RIT opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first, as Smith scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.
Stevens responded with three runs in the top of the second inning, all with two runs on back-to-back hits by Chris Coutrous, Anthony Andrews and Mike Rasulo. Rasulo was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Dornes earned his second win of the season on the mound, scattering nine hits in the complete-game effort.
Tosh and Smith each had two hits to lead the way for the Tigers in game two. Ed Hughes (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) scored two runs, while Kreag Bradley (Victor, NY/Victor) (Victor, NY/Victor) scored a run and also had an RBI.
The two teams split a doubleheader on Friday, with RIT winning game one 7-6 on a three-run walk-off home run by Kernan. Stevens won game two, 2-1 behind a solid pitching performance from Dan Anunziatta.
RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, 6-2. RIT has won six of its last eight games.
The Tigers are back in action on Tuesday, as they travel down East River Rd. to play the University of Rochester in a single game at 4 p.m.
