ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore
Dave Kernan (North Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) (Liverpool, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) hit a walk-off, pinch-hit, three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to lift the RIT baseball team (7-14, 2-4 Empire 8) to a dramatic 7-6 win over Stevens (11-13, 3-5 Empire 8) in game one of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at RIT Field. Stevens won game two by a score of 2-1.
Kernan ripped the first pitch he saw from Kyle Hanas over the left field fence for his team-best fourth home run of the season.
RIT trailed 6-3 heading into the seventh inning, when
Ben Robertson (Mecklenburg, NY/Trumansburg) (Mecklenburg, NY/Trumansburg) led off with a single.
Geoff Dornes (Landsville, PA/Hempfield) (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) followed with a single into left center, advancing Robertson to third. After
Jeremy Tosh (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) (Glenelg, MD/Hempfield) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, #
Raffaele Parisi (Rochester, NY/Aquinas)# (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) hit a frozen rope that was destined for center field, before it was snatched out of the air by second baseman Tom Phillips, whose diving grab saved at least a run.
Josh Rodems (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) drove in Robertson with a ground out to third, setting up the stage for Kernan's dramatic, walk-off blast.
RIT slammed 14 hits. Robertson was 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Dornes had two hits and scored twice.
Justin Smith (Livonia, NY/Livonia) (Livonia, NY/Livonia), Tosh and #
Kreag Bradley (Victor, NY/Victor)# (Victor, NY/Victor) also ripped two hits apiece.
Senior hurler #
Rory Camardello (Brighton, NY/Brighton)# (Rochester, NY/Brighton) earned his second win of the season, pitching a scoreless seventh inning in relief. #
Chris Miller (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta)# (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) started for RIT, throwing six innings, striking out three batters.
Stevens took a 4-1 lead in the second inning, aided by a three-run home run to left field off the bat of lead-off hitter Mark Rasulo. Dan Silva and Eddie Daniele were both 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI for the Ducks. Hanas took the loss in relief of starter Joe Finora, who pitched the first 6 1/3 innings.
In game two, Stevens scored single runs in the second and fifth innings and hung on for the 2-1 win.
Dan Anunziatta was strong on the hill for Stevens, allowing just an unearned run on six hits in six innings. Hanas pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save.
Cory Langtry (Moravia, NY/Moravia) (Moravia, NY/Moravia) pitched well for RIT, but took the hard-luck loss. He scattered six hits and struck out six in his second straight complete-game effort. Langtry pitched out of two bases-loaded jams, both in the innings he allowed a run. He made a great snag on a rocket of a line drive by Rasulo to end one bases-loaded threat in the second inning.
Kernan, the star in game one for RIT, drove in the only run in game two, with a single in the sixth inning.
Robertson was 2-for-3 in the loss for RIT. He was 5-for-7 on the afternoon and is hitting a robust .579 this season (11-for-19).
Stevens catcher Denis Ackerman threw out five would be RIT base stealers in nine attempts on the afternoon. Before today's doubleheader, RIT had only been caught stealing four times in its first 42 attempts.
The two teams conclude their weekend series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
