ROCHESTER, NY -- RIT student-athletes recently participated in RIT BIG READ and RIT BIG CLEAN in an effort to give back to the Rochester community. Members of the RIT community including student-athletes read to students and helped clean up at School #5 in downtown Rochester.
At the BIG READ, 53 members of the RIT community, including 45 student-athletes athletes and eight library staff, traveled to read to students at School #5.
Athletes and Library staff read “Amazing Tigers” to the entire first grade class in the gym. The learn-to-read book “Amazing Tigers” was then given to each first grader to keep.
The was joined by RITchie for some high fives and hugs! Then athletes and library staff participated in a huge jump-rope-a-thon and played games with the first graders.
After that, BIG READ members ventured to the kindergarten and second grades for one-on-one reading time.
The BIG CLEAN took place on Saturday, March 28. Head Track and Field Coach Dave Warth along with over 80 Track and Field athletes, three members of the women's basketball team and four library staff members descended on School # 5 for some Spring cleaning both indoors and out.
Cleaning duties ranged from cleaning bathrooms and hallways to washing windows and raking and picking up glass from the playground. All duties were done with vigor and enthusiasm.
