VIRGINIA BEACH, VA -- The RIT women's lacrosse team opened the 2009 season on Wednesday with a 7-3 win over Virginia Wesleyan College.
Shots were even at 25 apiece but RIT won the ground ball battle 14-13.
#Eileen Hennigan (Liverpool, NY/Christian Brothers Academy)# (Liverpool, NY/CBA) led RIT with a pair of goals. #
Ashley Pezze (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland)# (Guilderland, NY) and
#Nadia Pasicznyk (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia)# (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) each had a goal and an assist.
#Brittany Vakiener (Rochester, NY/Fairport)# (Rochester, NY/Fairport) led the Tigers with four ground balls while Pezze grabbed three.
#Kelsey Evans (Carlisle, PA/Cumberland Valley)# (Carlisle, PA/Cumberland Valley) picked up the win for RIT allowing three goals and making 13 saves.
The Tigers fell behind early in the first half but responded with four straight goals to close out the half leading 4-1 at the break.
#Megan Henriksen (Silver Spring, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel)# (Silver Spring, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel) tied the score at 1-1 with an unassisted goal with 20:45 to play in the half.
#Allyson Pisher (Holley, NY/Holley)# (Rochester, NY/Holley) took a feed from
#Danielle Previ (Medford, NJ/Shawnee)# (Medford, NJ/Shawnee), giving RIT a 2-1 lead with 15:16 to play in the half.
#Allie Coppola (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park)# (Orchard Park, NY) gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead with 13:34 to play in the opening half on an assist from Pasicznyk.
Hennigan closed out the scoring in the first half with the assist going to Pezze giving RIT a 4-1 lead at the half.
Virginia Wesleyan's Laura Norris opened the second half scoring, cutting RIT's lead to 4-2 early in the second half.
Pasicznyk made it 5-2 RIT with her first goal of the season on an assist from #
Rebecca Lampson (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy)# (Penn Yan, NY).
Norris scored again for the Marlins with 20:55 to play in the game, cutting the Tigers lead to 5-3.
Hennigan scored with 19:20 to play, making it 6-3 Tigers. Pezze rounded out the scoring with 12:50 to play giving RIT a 7-3 lead.
The Tigers will look to make it 2-0 on Thursday when they face Susquehanna University at Virginia Wesleyan College. Game time is 4 pm.
