ASTON, PA -- The sixth-ranked RIT women's hockey team (1-0-1, 1-0-1 ECAC West) picked up its first win of the 2009-10 season, 4-3 over Neumann University (2-1-1, 0-1-1 ECAC West) on Saturday afternoon.
Just last night's contest, the Tigers held a three-goal lead late in the second period, but allowed Neumann to get back into the game. This time the Tigers were able to hang on for the win.
Amanda Klassen (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Warner Warriors),
Kim Schlattman (Stratford, Ontario/Cambridge Fury),
Kayla Ross (Altoona, PA/Gilmour Academy), and
Ellesha Fortuna (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Barracudas) scored for RIT. Fortuna's goal was the first of her collegiate career, and proved to be the game-winner.
Sarah Dagg (St. George, Ontario/Hamilton Hawks) and
Ali Hills (Honeoye Falls, NY/Berkshire School) each had two assists.
Belina Hooper (Meaford, Ontario/Saugeen Maitland Lightning) picked up her first collegiate point, an assist.
Klassen opened the scoring 2:41 into the game. Jessica Schroder tied the game for the Knights midway through the frame. Schlattman and Ross tallied power-play tallies three minutes apart late the in the first period to make it 3-1. Fortuna gave RIT a 4-1 lead just 20 seconds into the second period.
RIT out-shot Neumann 30-19 and scored two power-play goals in eight opportunities. Neumann tallied once on eight power-play attempts.
Amy Torgerson (Owatonna, MN/Gilmour Academy) picked up the win in goal for RIT, stopping 16 shots. Shannon Donnelly made 26 saves for the Knights.
The Tigers lead the all-time series between the two schools, 7-0-1. Last night, the two teams skated to a 4-4 tie.
RIT is back in action on Friday, Nov. 20, as they host SUNY Potsdam in the home opener at 3 p.m.
