Women's hockey opens season with tie at Neumann

ASTON, PA -- The sixth-ranked RIT (0-0-1, 0-0-1 ECAC West) women's hockey team began the 2009-10 campaign with a 4-4 tie at ECAC West rival, Neumann University on Friday night. The Tigers held a three-goal lead late in the second period, but allowed three straight goals by the Knights late in the second and early in the third to tie the game at 4-4.

Junior captain, Sarah Dagg (St. George, Ontario/Hamilton Hawks) led RIT with a goal and two assists. Katie Stack (Batavia, NY/Rochester Edge), Kim Schlattman (Stratford, Ontario/Cambridge Fury) and Kayla Ross (Altoona, PA/Gilmour Academy) also had goals for the Tigers. Schlattman and Ross' goals were the first of their collegiate career. Kylie Mazzetta (Lakewood, CO/Colorado Selects) had three assists for RIT.

RIT took a 1-0 lead at 5:41 of the first period when Ross scored an even-strength goal on an assist from Dagg.

Dagg made it 2-0 with her first of the season on an assist from Mazzetta at 13:26 of the first period. Katie Stack made it 3-0 RIT, with a power play goal at 17:35 of the first with the assists going to Dagg and Mazzetta.

Neumann scored a goal late in the second period to pull within two goals at 3-1.

Schlattman gave the Tigers a 4-1 lead midway through the second period with her first career goal. It was a power play with the assists going to Kristina Moss (Webster, NY/Buffalo Bisons) and Mazzetta.

The Knights would answer with the final three goals of the game, tying the score at 4-4 on a goal by Jessica Schroeder at the 7:47 of the third.

RIT was out shot by Neumann, 26-25. The Tigers went 3-for-6 with the extra skater, while holding Neumann scoreless on four power play chances.

Amy Torgerson (Owatonna, MN/Gilmour Academy) got the start in goal for RIT, allowing four goals and making 22 saves.

These same two teams will face-off tomorrow afternoon at 3 pm in Aston, Pennsylvania.
