ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT women's basketball team improved to 3-1 on the season with a 62-54 win over SUNY Geneseo in non-conference action Monday evening. It was the first win for RIT over the Knights since the 2007-08 season.
RIT featured balanced scoring with five players scoring at least nine points. Freshman #
Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport) led the way with a career high 17 points. Anne Wapshare (Blasdell, NY/Immaculata Academy)# each had nine points for the Tigers. Dennis led RIT with 11 rebounds.
The Tigers led by as many as 15 points in the second half, but went without a field goal for 7:14 to allow Geneseo back in the game. Bri Dunton's layup with two minutes to play in regulation cut RIT's lead to 54-52.
Vakiener broke the drought with a jumper with 1:34 to play, giving the Tigers a 56-52 lead. RIT went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe over the final minutes to hold for the win.
RIT shot 42.2 percent from the floor on the game on 21-of-51 shooting. RIT went 4-for-12 from behind the arc, all of those coming in the first half. Geneseo out-rebounded the Tigers 47-45.
The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, December 2 when they host cross-town rival University of Rochester at 6 p.m. in Clark Gym.
