PLATTSBURGH, NY -- Despite a RIT single-game record nine 3-pointers and a career high 37 points from senior
Scott Young (Almond, NY/Hornell), the RIT men's basketball team (0-2) lost in overtime to Norwich University, 81-80 on Sunday in the consolation game of the 2009 Cardinal Classic hosted by SUNY Plattsburgh.
RIT led 39-34 at the half as the Tigers shot 44.1 percent in the first half. RIT shot 15-of-34 from the floor including 7-of-19 from behind the arc.
Young scored 18 of his game-high 37 points in the first half on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor including four three-pointers. He was 13-of-17 from overall from the field and 9-of-13 from behind the arc. Young also grabbed nine boards.
RIT extended its lead to 12 points early in the second half, going on a 16-9 run to open the half. Young's layup gave the Tigers their largest lead of the game at 55-43. He scored 19 of RIT's 36 points in the second half.
The Cadets roared back into the game, capping off a 19-4 run on a three-pointer by Jaren Jeffcoat to give Norwich a 62-59 lead.
Norwich extended their lead to six points late in the second half, but Young's three pointer with 1:28 to play capped off a mine-run and gave RIT a 73-71 lead.
With one second to play in regulation, Young drained two free throws to give the Tigers a 75-73 lead. Jeffcoat tied the score at 75-75 with a jump shot with 18 seconds to play in regulation.
Sophomore
Brendan Harder (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta)'s block at the buzzer on a layup attempt by Norwich's Israel Guardado preserved the tie and sent the game into overtime.
Harder scored four points and had a rebound to keep RIT in the game in the overtime. But, the Cadets outscored the Tigers 6-5 in the overtime session.
Quincy Williams' jumper with 18 seconds to play in overtime proved to be the game-winner. Harder had a layup with two seconds to play to cut the lead to one point at 81-80 but time ran out for the Tigers.
Brendan Harder (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) finished with 13 points for the Tigers.
Anthony Terry (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) chipped in 17 points, four rebounds and three steals.
The Tigers are off until Sunday, November 30 when they travel to SUNY Cobleskill. Tip-off is at 2 pm in Cobleskill, New York.
