ONEONTA, NY - Senior
Jason Wake (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy) won the individual title at 157 lbs., leading the RIT wrestling team to a fifth place finish out of 12 teams at the Red Dragon Invitational, hosted by Oneonta State University on Saturday. The Tigers finished with 73.5 points. The College of New Jersey won the tournament with 152 points.
Wake, the top seed in the tournament, went 4-0 on the afternoon to improve to 9-1 this season. He won his first two matches of the day via pins before defeating No. 4 Mike Guenther of Scranton, 5-0. In the championship, Wake dispatched No. 3 Cory Mahoney of SUNY Cortland, pinning him 2:57 into the match to claim the victory.
Wake's twin brother Josh, a senior at Oneonta State, won the individual title at 184 lbs.
Sophomore
Ben Johnstone (West Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) earned a runner-up finish at 174 lbs., finishing 3-1 on the afternoon. Johnstone, the No. 2 seed, won his first three matches of the day in convincing fashion, before falling to top-seed Brian Broderick of The College of New Jersey, 8-1 in the championship.
Freshman
Dakota Tiger (Champaign, IL/Centennial) earned an impressive third place finish at 184 lbs., winning his final sixth matches of the day after losing his first match. Tiger went 6-0 in the wrestlebacks, culminating with a 6-0 over Brian Karamer of Oneonta State in the third place match.
Freshman
Tyler Brent (Gasport, NY/Royalton-Hartland) was 3-2 and finished fifth at 174 lbs.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, December 5, as they host the RIT Tournament.
