MOUNT MORRIS, NY -
The RIT women’s cross country team placed sixth out of 23 teams and fifth out of the 22 collegiate teams on Saturday at the 2009 SUNY Geneseo Invitational held at Letchworth State Park with a team score of 162, just seven points behind Laurentian. Geneseo won the team title with 41 points. Today's race was a preview of the 2009 Atlantic Regional, which will be held at scenic Letchworth State Park on November 14.

Freshman Anna Guthrie (Essex Junction, VT/Essex) was the Tiger’s top runner over the wet 6,000 meter course, coming in 31st with a time of 24:13. Following close behind were fellow teammates Jouhan Allende (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy) in 33rd with a time of 24:16 and Abby Ake (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford)r who was 37th with a time of 24:18. Freshman Rachel Zoyhofski (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) was 40th with a time of 24:26 while junior Arielle Januszkiewicz (Amherst, NY/Amherst) rounded out the top five finishers coming in 43rd with a time of 24:32. The top five runners had only a 19 second gap between them.

Head coach Dave Stevens was pleased with his team’s performance.

“Overall I am pleased with our effort," said Stevens.  "Today we had our fourth different top finisher of the season, and a 19 second gap from our first to fifth runner. That is almost unheard of, especially when scoring so high as a team. I anticipate that one of these ladies will break out of this group, and the others will follow suit. I expect our team to continue to improve over the coming weeks, as we prepare for our stretch run.”

The women’s cross country team will be back in action on October 17, when they travel to Albany, N.Y. to compete in the SUNY Albany Invitational.
