Women's crew enjoys successful day at Head of the Fish Regatta

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY - The women’s crew team ended the fall head racing season Sunday at the Head of the Fish Regatta. The Tigers arrived in Saratoga Springs in full force, with a record four eights competing and strong showings in all events.

The varsity eight finished 10th in the seventeen boat field, racing the 3,400-meter course in 13:32.24. RIT was powered by coxswain Alyssa Mulholland (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy), stroke Allison LaChance (Pompey, NY/Fabius-Pompey), seven seat Erica Gantz (Rosendale, NY/Rondout Valley), six seat Sam Whalen (Westfield, MA/Westfield), five seat Alex King (Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth), four seat Kristina Lozar (Brooklyn, NY/Adelphi Academy), three seat Ariel Leitao (Newton, MA/Tabor Academy), two seat Morgan Mowins (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius ) and bow Emily Burns (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck).

Williams won the event with a time of 12:20.96.

In the junior varsity eight event, the Tigers second varsity finished 10th of thirteen boats with a time of 14:52.22. The line-up featured coxswain Eileen Kobal (Erie, PA/Fairview), stroke Erin Mooney (Dayton, OH/Oakwood), seven seat Allison Doster (Syracuse, NY/LaFayette), six seat Brittany Lemenager (Brigantine, NJ/Atlantic City), five seat Ashley Pastor (Poughkeepsie, NY/F.D. Roosevelt), four seat Becca Laymon (Huntsville, AL/Catholic), three seat Kim Gerwig (Corning/Painted Post West), two seat Carol Records and bow Laura Battisti (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson). St. Lawrence finished first with a time of 13:05.30.

The Tigers’ novices had excellent performances, coming in 12th and 20th, respectively, in the thirty-three boat field. The Kate’s line-up featured Anna Lee (Newcasle, ME/Lincoln Academy), Morgan Mowins (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius ), Kim Gerwig (Corning/Painted Post West), Brittany Lemenager (Brigantine, NJ/Atlantic City), Maddie Burke (Columbia, MD/Notre Dame Prep), Danielle Breslin (Virginia Beach, VA/Tallwood), Mary Medino (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes), Carol Records and Laura Battisti (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson). Coxswain Lee navigated the course in 15:09.59. Emma Marsch (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia Central), Jess Ford (Greene, NY/Greene), Sarah Crosby (Upton, Mass.), Carolyn Dunne (Rochester, NY/Odyssey Academy), Sabine Loebner (Doebeln, Germany/Lessing-Gymnasium Doebeln), Katie Burke (Lagrangeville, NY/Arlington), Angela Mastrogiacomo (Commack, NY/Commack ) and Stephanie Chandler (Kirkland, WA/Lake Washington) comprised the line-up in the Briggs. They powered down the race course in 15:47.72.

Coach Fredyne Yust was pleased with the day’s racing. “It was very exciting for the program to have four eights racing, and for all boats to be competitive. Many of the women had their first race experience, and our performances today provide a lot of momentum as we enter the winter and prepare for the spring season.”

The Tigers also raced a mixed alumni boat, comprised of Ellen Cretekos (Binghamton, NY) ‘07, Sarah Exley (Valley Forge, PA/Gwynedd-Mercy Academy) ’08, Chris Frey (/Franklin High School) ‘07, Erin Fredericks (Wilmington, DE/Concord High School) ‘07, Colleen Gillette (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) and Peter Sulcs (Chagrin Falls, OH/Gilmour Academy) ’05, masters ’09. RIT coaches Nick Baish (Marist ’04), Brendon Evans (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) ’08, and Fredyne Yust (St. Lawrence ’05) RIT masters ’09 filled out the line-up. The boat powered down the course with a time of 12:55.6.
