OSWEGO, NY - Junior
#Mike McInally (Bergen, NY/Byron-Bergen)# (Byron, NY/Byron-Bergen) was the lone Division III wrestler to win a title at the 2009 New York State Wrestling Championships held at SUNY Oswego this weekend. The Tigers finished seventh out of 18 teams with 62.5 points.
McInally, seeded first at 125 lbs. went 5-0 the weekend. He opened Friday's action with a pin over Pete Cole of Alfred State in 1:34, then scored a technical fall victory over Anthony Lebbad of Ithaca, 17-0. McInally advanced to the semifinals after defeating Shawn Haney of Brockport by pin in 3:20. McInally defeated Kyle Gilchrist of Columbia, 6-2 in the semifinals. He defeated #2 Dan Bishop of Buffalo, 3-1 in the championship. McInally is now 22-0 this season and ranked fourth in Division III at 125 lbs.
Junior
#Jason Wake (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy)# (Delhi, NY/Delaware Academy), the #2 seed at 165 lbs., finished third. He reached the semifinals after defeating Andrew Greenlaw of SUNY Oswego, 8-1. He then fell to Eren Civan of Division I Columbia, 7-4 in the semifinals. Wake then defeated Ron Majerus of Buffalo, 11-5 and Will Brodfuerher of Cortland, 6-3 to secure third place.
Senior
#Luke Baum (Ontario, NY/Wayne)# (Ontario, NY/Wayne) seeded second at 141 lbs., finished fifth. He got off to a good start, securing a pin over William Simpson of Army in 2:47 and 9-4 win over Justin Seifried of Ithaca to reach the semifinals. He then lost to Mark Lewandoeski of Division I Buffalo, 2-0 in the semifinals. In the consolation round, Baum lost to William Simpson of Army, 8-2, but rebounded to defeat Seifried for the second time this weekend in the fifth place match, 6-4.
Senior
#Nick Ryan (Fairport, NY/Fairport)# (Fairport, NY/Fairport) won his first round match at 174 lbs., via technical fall, 16-1 in 7:00 over Don Schildhauer of North Country Community College, while
#John Durfee (Rutland, VT/Fair Haven Union)# (Rutland, VT/Fair Haven Union) advanced at 184 lbs., with a pin in 1:23 over Bill Tuohy of Morrisville State. Both men were defeated in the second round. Ryan placed eighth overall.
The TIgers return to action on Wednesday, as they host SUNY Morrisville in a single dual match at 7 p.m.
