ITHACA, NY – The RIT men's track and field squad set two school records and is second after Friday's action at the 2019 Liberty League Indoor Track and Field Championship from Glazer Arena at the Athletics and Events Center on the campus of Ithaca College Action for the two-day championship will resume at 11 a.m. Saturday.
RIT has a team score of 61.5 points, right behind host Ithaca, who has 72.5 points and just ahead of Rensselaer, who has 61 team points.
Jack Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) was RIT's lone winner of the evening, clearing 4.65 meters in the pole vault. He was the lone vaulter to clear 4.50 meters on his first try, which was the difference for the victory. Smith's win ensured a win by a Tiger in the Liberty League Championship for the seventh straight season. Alberto Lafuente Veron (4.50 meters) and
Thomas James (/) (4.35 meters) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
RIT will have three student-athletes in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles Saturday.
Max Gloskey (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) set a meet record and broke a school mark as the fastest performer in the preliminaries, crossing the finish line in 8.24 seconds.
Daniel Giuliano (Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) and
Zack Wigent (Fariport, NY/Fairport) were the fourth and fifth fastest finishers, respectively.
Curtis Geiger (Allentown, PA/Emmaus) broke a school mark in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash, hitting the wire in 6.97 seconds. Gloskey was a mere six one-hundredths of a second back in 7.03 seconds.
Geiger also enjoyed a standout performance in the 400-meter dash, placing second, breaking the 50-second barrier in a time of 49.98.
Christopher Callejo (West Babylon, NY/Patchouge-Medford) was seventh in the event, recording a time 51.23 seconds.
Otto Kingstedt (Stockholm, Sweden/Cybergymnasiet) recorded a fourth place finish in the 5,000-meters with a time of 14:59.55.
The Tigers distance medley relay team of
Andrew Chabot (Campton, NH/Plymouth Regional), Callejo,
Derek Swarthout (Macedon, NY/Penfield) and
Evan Feigel (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) placed third overall in a time of 10:22.98.
Chabot also placed eighth in the mile with a time of 4:23.51.
Matthew Funicelli (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) recorded an impressive second place finish in the shot put, with a toss of 14.27 meters.
Zach Darling (Rome, PA/Northeast Bradford) was right behind in fourth with a throw of 13.59 meters.
Jeff Walter (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis) placed third in the long jump, with a leap of 7.00 meters. Giuliano was seventh with a jump of 6.56 meters.
