Wrestling finishes 13th at the 2018 New York State Intercollegiate Championships

ITHACA, NY – The RIT wrestling team finished 13th out of 23 teams at the 2017 New York State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships hosted by Cornell University Sunday. The Tigers recorded 43.5 points.
 
The United States Military Academy was the team champion with 99 points, outlasting Division III Ithaca, who had 89.5 points. RIT was sixth out all Division III teams competing on the afternoon.
 
RIT had two place winners in John Donohue (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) and Joe Lupisella (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder).
 
Donohue finished fourth overall at 165 lbs., going 3-2 on the day. He opened the day with a fall in 1:49 over Devin Horton over Alfred State College and won his second round match, 10-7 over Christian Willoughby of Merchant Marine Academy. Donohue won 10-3 over Nathan Thacker of Finger Lakes Prep in the quarterfinals before falling in the semfinals and third place match.
 
Lupisella placed sixth at 174 lbs., finishing 4-2. Lupisella lost his opening round match but rebounded to win four straight in the consolation rounds, including in overtime as a sudden victory to advance to the fifth place match. Lupisella battled William Sims of Merchant Marine, before dropping a 4-3 decision.
 
Sam Weinger (Blooming Grove, NY/Washingtonville) (197 lbs.), Colby Hall (Deposit, NY/Deposit) (157 lbs.), Michael McGowan (157 lbs.), Shane Murphy (Mt. Olive, NJ/Mt. Olive) (141 lbs.) and Shane Thompson (Newtown, PA/Council Rock) (141 lbs.) won two matches apiece. Weinger earned a win by fall and major decision, while McGowan won both his matches by fall. Thompson's wins were the first two of his collegiate career.
 
Chris Dean (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) won his first collegiate match at 125 lbs., while Joe Brillo (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) (141 lbs.) picked up a win by fall for his first collegiate victory. Joe Mannarino (Clarence, NY/Clarence) (174 lbs.) also picked up his first collegiate win by fall.
 
Vincent Buscemi (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) (165 lbs.), Morgan Seller (Lyons Falls, NY/South Lewis) (174 lbs.), Joey Monteleone (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) (184 lbs.) and Chris St. Denny (Bridgeport, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) (285 lbs.) had one win each.  

RIT returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 1 when the Tigers host the RIT Invitational beginning at 9 a.m. at the Gordon Fieldhouse.
